The Coin Big Brother Program

I'm sure that someone in your past was responsible for getting you interested in our great hobby. Mine for instance was my Grandfather and Grandmother Roy and Anna. I can't think of any better way to repay them for this gift but to do the same for somebody else.

I've been trying to think of ways to help new collectors get a nice collection going. I have come up with the Big Brother/Big Sister program for coin collectors.

I think that as a group we could better help new collectors by helping them start a series that they are interested in. I'm not talking about giving away great rarities here, just some spares that most of us longtime collectors have piles of, or old folders to begin their set. And most importantly, literature and honest collecting advice. I have chosen Joedas and his brother Bradarv90 as the first recipients of this idea.

I am looking for a few of you longtime collectors to join me in this. Of course, as with anything, there must be a few rules. First of all, I think that we should follow the contest guidelines for this in that there should no money ever asked of the recipient. Not for coins, Not for postage, not for anything. This is purely voluntary. Second, pick somebody to help. And third, have fun and remember that you are doing a great thing for someone.

Help me build the coin collecting utopia.

I love your idea and would love to help out but I'm only 15 but maybe eventually I'll become a mentor if this idea catches on.

Oh sorry, I guess I read your message wrong, correction made.

  7. I have a person in mind that I would like to give a nice coin to, but I am open to a whole program of mentoring young collectors.

Why would you want to taint this thread by making an inappropriate post like this?

I'm in, but I have no idea of who to "sponsor". We should create a list of eligible YN and then we can pair them.

It also might be helpful if both the mentor and the YN listed their collecting area so we could be better informed when selecting.

That's a good idea, maybe people interested could start listing their interests. Thank you for your help keeping this thread clean.

Ha ha... aren't you special. How about contributing something positive instead of making stupid, totally uncalled for comments.

Mentoring a YN is a noble, kind, and commendable gesture.

    Hello everyone,

I suspect that all YNs that are CoinTalkers are already pretty interested in coin collecting & we are already all friends, mentors, big brothers, etc. I know that most of the folks here are always willing to help & mentor.

Has anyone considered/discussed a CT program where we could donate a CoinTalk Summer Seminar Scholarship to a YN?

Cazkaboom One for all, all for me.

I was preparing a "Gift package" For Koen packed full of coins and information...

Then I heard the news and was pretty saddened.

Sorry to rain on the parade with depression.

I am fairly new here, so I wasn't fortunate enough to know Koen. But it was very sad to hear of his early passing, he seemed like a wall liked member of our little family and will be missed.

I'm sure glad that you like them. I hope that it helps start you on the silver path. Roosevelts are a great place to start, they can be fairly easily found raw in mint state for near melt price. And a good way to begin practicing grading skills. Those old Whitman albums will give them some beautiful toning over time as a bonus. Don't forget to ignore the grade on that slab, that company never graded properly. But it's still a pretty nice coin. Just curious, what grade do you think it truly is?

I don't think I have the patience to wait for any toning haha. And I have no Idea when it comes to grading, but I'd say ms62 maybe, am I close?

I was saying that the act of collecting a series will help you become a better grader. Just seeing coins with complete luster will help you better understand what higher grades are. Start by going to a show and examining graded examples then look for a raw ones with similar qualities. As far as the coins in the album, I have no idea what those grade, I haven't looked at those in years. I would give the Mercury a MS-64 no FSB though.

How can you not have time for toning? Just fill it up than set it aside for about ten years while you work on another collection.

I just came across this thread, well, a link to the thread at least. I think that this thread should be resurrected. I would love to participate myself, but I tend to collect more expensive coins, and I doubt anyone will want to feed my addiction. Anyhow, I hope that some more people will find this thread and respond.
