I have a couple gold qauarter-eagles. I'm curious about what the difference is between what the 'coins & collectables' dealer stated and what they'd actually bring as historical items. I might be mistaken in thinking that they're worth a bit more than the weight alone.

    Welcome! :)

I would not sell it to just any dealer. Us members will be able to give you a estimated value.

However, we will need clear, detailed photos of the item, to make any estimates.

If the coins have been cleaned (tiny micro scratches you can see under magnification), or holed, you can expect much less for them, possibly only their weight in gold.

If that is the case, you can get about ~$180-200 for the gold content, depending on weight (a holed coin will weigh less).

If the coin is uncleaned, and not holed, you could get about $250+ for it.

But many times they are not worth more than the weight alone. The value of any coin depends on several things. Post some pictures of what you have and we will try and help you determine what they might be worth.

The condition (grade) and rarity of the quarter eagles will determine any value above the gold content. That's why pictures of both sides (obverse and reverse) are so important.

To echo other's sentiments, to be worth more than its gold value we would need the details of the coin, (grade, date, mintmark).

I know a lot of non-collectors think something so old has to have historical value, but the truth is these can be very common coins. A great many are basically only worth the gold content.
