1987 canadian silver dollar Hi there was hoping some of you coin buffs might be able to help me out? My grandfather who is very old has a 1987 silver dollar...he tells me he has looked into the coin and has called someone in Ottawa and this coin is suppose to be *very* rare.....so rare ...there we're only 3 made?...I find this hard to believe...the coin has the young queen on one side and the loon on the other with the year 1987...thats it any help would be appreciated thanks in advance
Hi Decca. Welcome to the forum. It's better to use a new thread for a new topic, so I've moved your post into its own thread. I'd sure like to get some of that stuff your grandfather's contact in Ottawa is smoking! There were 138,893,539 business strike Loonies and 175,259 proofs dated 1987. The proof catalogs at US$6.75 and brilliant uncirculated business strikes (MS53) catalog at US$2.25.
He needs what I'm smok'n LOL Sorry about that and thanks.....figured I'd keep it in that thread since it was on Can silver dollars he had the 1 800 number of the Canadian mint tucked in with the coin and the contact's name of the person he spoke to He spoke to a Murray Church at 1 800 267 1871 @ ext993 or 2239....I guess i could always call but I thought I'd try online first ...thanks for the info! my grandfather obviously did talk to someone ....I checked the 1 800 number on the canadian mints website....btw I should add...he talked to this person a few years back.
The coin you described does sound like a regular loon dollar. Except for the silver part. Was this just a slip of the tongue, or is your coin really silver?
Decca,if it is a larger sized dollar, then it is a nickel Voyageur. If it is a gold colour, then it is a regular Loonie. Aidan.
Loonie I agree with Aidan. There are no silver loonies minted in 1987. There were commemorative silver dollars but they had John Davis' sailing ship on them celebrating the 400th anniversary of the search for the North West passage. There were also nickel "voyageur" coins that were sold in sets. The gold-coloured loonie (has the famous "loon" on the reverse) was introduced in 1987 but NEVER in silver.
I'm sorry guys been awhile ...it was a slip ...its 1887 ...he also has many quarters ,dimes and nickels ranging from 1900 - 1969 ...any worth in these ...thanks?
There were no Canadian Dollar coins in 1887. The only Canadian dollar that only had three minted was the 1911 dollar two silver and one lead all trial strikes, but two of those are in the National Currency Museum in Ottawa and the third is in a private collection. It last went up for auction in 2003.
From your original description it kind of sounds like a 1967 Silver dollar. It has a young queen and a Flying Canada Goose. Oh and Welcome Back
Thats Funny.. .. Cause i have a 1990 loonie that i think is silver... its not magnetic.... Till now, i always thought it was a fake. Making me think now... hmmm
I've posted in a different thread, thought I would throw a comment out here. I have a 'silver' Loonie minted 1987. Its a loonie and its not gold coloured. If anyone has any info on the coin it would be great to know. thanks
It has probably been dipped, plated or washed to make it appear "silver". There were no silver or nickel loonies made in 1987. Sometimes kids coated coins with mercury (usually stolen from Chem class) to make them appear silver ... if so, wash your hands, don't sniff or lick it, and don't get it anywhere near anything gold.
