When the icy winds of winter wither away and the weather warms, the spring high tides deposit driftwood, shells and an occasional coin on the uncrowded Fenwick Island beach. This time of year is ideal for following in Zippy Lewis' footsteps in search of lost coins from a forgotten shipwreck or a lost pirate's loot.

In 1872, David Long visited Fenwick Island with a friend. Years later he wrote: "After viewing the island, we drove about two miles south of the island and there we found three dwellings, all houses occupied. In the first house, we found a widow, Zippy Lewis, her skin browned by the sun. We had our dinner with her. It is reported that she had a lot of beach money buried on the island somewhere."

Could the "Black Bread" perhaps be pumpernickel?

I can't spell Pumpernickel, although that sounds like a coin...
