Hit yet another old farm house this a.m. It is next to the one I hit a few days back. Same family owned them back in the 1840s. First picture is of everything I dug up before a cleaning. Next one is of the 1835 large cent cleaned up a bit. I love finding the old large cents. Two nice Indian head pennies. The 1878 is a good date to find. I think the next pic is a silver button. And the last picture is of two nickels. A 1918D buffalo and a 1944P silver war nickel. A very fun time out again diggin in the dirt for old coins. Jim
niec! i would metal detect but unfortunately i have low-end detector. and living in AZ it doesnt help with all the rocks and mineralization - fake signals
Good job. Its always great to find nice coins like the 78 Indian. What's the nicest coin you've ever found that way?
Depends on what you mean by nicest? If ya mean valuable. I have found a 1877 Indian head penny. If you mean nicest looking...I would have to go with a 1917 type 2 S.L Quarter. But I love those quarters, so I'm partial. Jim
WOW Very impressive detector! What's the best thing/coin you've ever found? has it paid for itself yet?
To gulfo...Yes it has paid for itself many times. My most valuable coin find was the 1877 Indian head penny. Also have found other key date Indians and other type coins. Found a 1914 D wheatie. Real nice silver coins. Barbers, seateds, S.L. I have found just about every type coin but Bust coins. Never found a silver 3 center or a nickel 3 center. All other types though. Also find civil war tokens and buttons. Found a cool war of 1812 officers sword belt plate. The odds and ends stuff I find are worth some moola as well. Found a 1916 dog tag that I sold on e-bay for $80.00 plus an old Michigan Central Railroad Baggage claim tag for $100. also sold that on e-bay. To Bruce..... The deepest I find coins at are in the 10 range. I have heard of it going deeper but I have not experienced that. Thanks, Jim
Wow Jim, thats pretty cool. I see commercials all the time on TV and stuff, but I guess you just have to know where to look, if you don't mind me asking, what kinda places do you look for?
Hey what is the location of your finds? Maybe we can get a few hundred or thousand ou us out there to help you find everything. Or would that sorta like being the one to yell gold rush?
I wasn't really interested in the exact places, just types of places. Like old buildings, farms, etc.
Well, the best places for me are old home sites. Its really the last of the virgin spots for metal detecting. Most old parks and other spots have been hammered by others over the years but you can still find goodies at these spots. Old home sites are a blast. You can almost always find at least one old coin at them. Old school sites and church sites are other great places to go. Ya need to learn what the detector is telling you and after you do that the main thing to successful metal detecting is Location, Location, Location. This morning I went to a one room school site I have detected in the past quite a bit and still managed a 1891 Indian head penny. Don't fall for what the comercial says about telling you whats in the ground. It can give you a great idea but the main way to tell is by the sound. Once you learn the sound of a good coin target you'll be all set. All most all old coins are deeper than 4 inches but there is always the exception. Especially next to old trees as the roots can keep the coins close to the surface. Thats my two cents. Jim
Here is todays meger finds... ...still makes it worth while to go out and find a Indian head penny. 1891.
