Hello all, for the last few years i have been slowly putting together a graded au buffalo set in ngc registry, without varieties. All the coins are graded au 53 to 58 by ngc or pcgs. I started out buying most of tough ones early on. I came to a point where i only need just a few more. I thought the 21 p was a no brainier. Wow am i wrong. I have been looking for one for almost a year now, and nothing. The last 5 shows i been at nothing. I was talking to one of the dealers at the baltimore show, and he said this is a very tough date to find in problem free higher grades, xf to au. He explained how the mintage was high enough nobody really saved them, and almost low enough to make the scarce. I figured this would be a 150 dollar coin tops. My search goes on. Anybody else going through this with the 21. And with them so rarely coming up, how will the vaule be effected? Could this be a r-5 coin? Im still in need .
They can be found, have you checked the online auction houses? You might have a harder time finding them in the AU range but MS64 and MS65 come around quite often, usually in the $600-$800 range.
You could settle for a VF30 for just $31.50 off eBay currently and ends in 6 hours: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1921-NGC-VF-30-BUFFALO-NICKEL-5C-D-S-BD66-/140732541167?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item20c45028ef#ht_2468wt_1165
Yea i have been checking the different auctions, shows ect... I have seen quite a few ms 63 64 ect.. Coins come up as well. And yes the are very expensive. The problem is they dont match my au set. A au 55 or 58 21 p buffalo is what im hunting. These au, problem free graded ones are the problem finding and are not coming up for sale.
This is one of those things you will just have to be patient on. Have you checked the NGC and PCGS population reports? You might have to find a raw one to get graded - just an option I thought I would mention.
I agree, I was doing some more checking around and I came to the same conclusion. It might just be easier to buy a raw one and get it slabbed yourself.
Yea thats maybe the road im heading down. It could be a expensive lesson for me, and test my buffalo grading skills. Yikes!! I have done all sorts of searches and talked with others as well and they just flat out dont come up for sale. I truly believe this could be a r-5 or better coin in a true au problem free coin. If anybody has one or knows where to find one graded 53 55 58 by ngc or pcgs please let me know, thanks
I'm gonna say no... It wouldn't. If a coin is somewhat plentiful in MS63, 64, and 65 but hard to find in AU, that does not make the AU coin worth more. It basically means: A) The coins did not circulate so therefore a higher percentage was saved as MS (Not the case with this coin) or... B) That not many people have thought it was worth sending an AU coin in to get graded and most of the slabbed AU coins were sent in hoping for an MS grade. The AU coins are out there, they just aren't in the holder.
Oh yea I agree with you. I was just joking. That's would be wild though, a Au coin worth more then a MS. A condition rareity.
And it is. Here are 4 completed, and recent (from Feb of this year to Feb of last year) auctions from Heritage with the realized price ranging from $59 to $172. http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=131208&lotNo=22058 http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=131203&lotNo=22137 http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=131148&lotNo=29033 http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1152&lotNo=7677 You just have to patient, start watching Heritage, ask dealers you trust to find one for you. They're out there, just not in large numbers because there other people trying to do the same thing you are trying to do because of the price range for MS examples.
