I dont think any one coin was how i got started in coin collecting. It started for me at age 7 my first year in grade school as each morning i was given 25 cents by my dad for lunch. Sometimes it was a quarter but not always in the coin form. Sometimes it would be two dimes and a nickle or five nickles. Setting on the bus going to school id look at those coins and thought how great they looked. The mecury dimes and standing liberty 25 cents were my most favorites. Today i still love those two coins but find any coin that is silver to be my main coins to collect. All the coins i have are raw coins i found in change or while metal detecting. I have never cared that much for slab or high graded coins. Maybe i just love a coin that shows it wear and the history it has. As always each to his own and regardless what you collect do it for the hobby and not just for the profit. For me it makes it more fun and i can live knowing i still have coins that maybe are not worth what others have but i do have one anyway. For me thats the most fun and i dont have to be rich or well off to enjoy the hobby iv grown to love.
a 1959 franklin proof got me hooked. the one coin i will have until they nail shut my coffin(sorry economy, im taking it with me.)
Because they didn't find any members on the forum at 5:49 A.M. nor 5:50 A.M and because they're new to the forum and not aware of the double thread rule?
Probably not any one single coin. The earliest one I can remember that I saved was a 1987 Canadian Loon dollar. I dont know what ever happened to that original one. I bought a BU one last year in remembrance of it, which is way nicer than the one I had. My first big interest was buffalo nickels. I had a set. Sold it in my teens. Started a new, better set as an adult. 19 to go.
1876 Liberty Seated Quarter. I used to go with my mom to Pigley Wigley's Grocery store outside of Jacksonville N.C. While she was shopping I would stare at the lobster tank (I was 5 at the time). Onetime going in we noticed a Coin Shop and went on in. I believe the man who ran the store was named Mr. Futural and he was really nice. Pretty soon I would just hangout in the coinstore while my mom went grocery shopping. The first coin I ever bought was an 1876 Liberty Seated Quarter for 2 dollars. I still have it, and will post pictures when I find (on computer). Pretty soon I was picking weeds and doing as many chores as I could to earn trips to the grocery store. Danscos were getting filled and things were good. Then I word that we were moving to Japan. Dun Dun Dun.
That coin really peaked my interest, I'd say. My dad gave it to me. I wondered who this fellow was sitting by a shield on this dime. That got me researching the different US coin types and designs, and ultimately jump started my collecting.
mine was just silver coins. when i was about 6 in 1965, i remember my mom going to do laundry or anywhere we would go thru the dimes and quarters pick out the silver. i had a great time and alot of fond memories bout that time with her.
