I have only been collecting for about a year and a half and want to start getting a few of my coins graded to assure myself of their authenticity. Anyone have any issues with Isabella quarters getting "no grades" due to cleaning or damage? I'll post a pic and let me know what you all think.
Generally, when a TPG is going to body bag a coin for reasons that are obvious to them, such as improperly cleaned, damage, etc. they label them as DETAILS GENUINE, or GENUINE IMPROPERLY CLEANED, etc. That authenticates the coin, but because of the details or damage(either environmental or from improper cleaning) it won't grade.
Unfortunately, lots of Isabella quarters were either harshly cleaned or polished in their day. Actual original Isabella's sell for a substantial premium if it grades out.
Ouch Joe, based off the photo, it appears someone put a little elbow grease into it. The hairlines and even flat gray color give it all away.
Put it in the window sill and see if it tones. Gonna take awhile. After that, put it in an airtite and enjoy it for what it is.....
Bottom line, It really only matters what others think if you plan on selling it. If not then enjoy it for what it is like Green said. It is your coin, in your collection. Who cares what everyone else thinks! Be happy and collect coins!
