Looking at both proof and deep mirror proof like morgans on feebay. (Not that I can afford one). Anyway, I looked at both, and quite a few of them looked the same as far as strike, details, etc. So how can the grading companies tell a morgan is a proof, instead of a proof-like, and vice versa?
Each company has their own standards. Go look at some on Ebay, and you can tell. Proofs are struck differently, they have more reflective fields.
I read an article the other day that said to take a ruler and hold it next to the coin. Take something(business card, book, etc.) and hold it next to the coin. Move it up the ruler away from the coin and see how far you can go until you can't clearly see what ever you are holding in the coin's fields. I think it said 3" or closer was Proof-like and 6" for Deep Mirror Proof-like.
Proof and PL/DMPL are not related. Proofs are not business strikes, they are made a special planchets and dies. Don't let the term proof like throw you off. The PL/DMPL coins are business strikes with mirrors. You will here all sorts of different measurements on the mirrors. They key is look for mirrors, a break in the mirrors may kill the chance at DMPL/PL. This coin has reverse die polish which I really like but this may hold it back today And then you have this coin which is very deep: If you want to see a bunch more you can always look here: http://bluccphotos.com/set/
