Hi All, Is anyone familliar with SGS (Star Grading Service)? Are they a reliable grading service? How do they compare with PCGS / NGC? Thanks
im sorry but its not even a grading service its a marketing thing do not buy from them they grade way over the real grade im sorry if you bought something from then i hope it was cheap cause if not you lost some money
Oh geez, are you gonna get an earful with that question. heheheh Just like the man said before me, run away as fast as you can and if you've already bought from them return it or cancel your bid. If I had time I'd go into more detail but I'm on my lunch break. I'm sure there will be no end of people willing to elaborate on exactly why they aren't a good deal though.
Thank you all for your rapid reply! I have not purchased from them yet! I am the current high bidder on a slabbed 2000S PR70 complete mint set at $36.99. If no one outbids me I will cancel my bid. How does this seller get a 99.2% positive feedback rating?
Two main reasons... the deal in high volume, so have a huge customer base... since each person who deals with them can only lower or raise the feedback by 1, the people who are satisfied because they don't know any better or just leave positive feedback out of habit greatly overwhelm all the negative feedback they receive. Also a lot of people who are not satisfied don't bother leaving negative feedback either because they find it a hassle or are worried about retaliatory negative feedback, which he almost always leaves for anyone who leaves him a negative. A lot of people with complaints give neutral feedback instead of negative, which does lower the percenteage of positive feedback they have but doesn't affect their rating. If you look at Toolhaus.com they can filter out all the positives and show you exactly what this or any other eBay user has received in negative and neutral feedback.
Everyone here. They are a marketing tool, not a grading service, and yes, they are very reliable - they can be counted on to grossly overgrade anything in one of their el cheapo slabs. Like apples to oranges, or, more precisely automobile manufacturers to Car & Driver Magazine appliance manufacturers to Consumers Union motion picture producers to movie critics.
To answer your question, most people on this forum are familiar with SGS, they are sort of the anti-reliable grading service, and they don't compare to PCGS/NGC because PCGS/NGC are independent third party graders, while SGS has a direct buisiness with E-Bay giant ABON.
Just buy the 2000 proof set in the original mint package,it will be worth more than those cheesy looking SGS holders,(the grade that SGS puts on them means absolutly nothing) and the price should be about the same.
Ok, this is the third time ( I think) that I have logged in today and everytime there is a new response. I just wanna curl up in a ball and cry from laughign so hard. My friend, Please search for SGS, use a site like toolhaus.org to focus on negative and neutral feedback and research research research everyone and everything. Do not rely on their rating alone. I have seen some good sellers who had lousy buyer feedback from disgruntled sellers. And lastly, listen to the senior members here, they know their shtuff. I have learned so much from them, I can only hope to retire one day and be like em lol
Gee...I'll try to hold back. 1.) Google "SGS coins" here and elsewhere. Look at the first 2 to 3 pages for results and you will get an earful. 2.) SGS is owned and operated by the eBay powerseller Aboncom. Bottom line is that they take their own coin inventory and package them in their own plastic with MS70 or PR70 labels. There is nothing third-partied about this outfit...just some slick marketing and bogus certificate of authencities to make buyers more comfortable with their purchase/bid. 3.) Watch out for secondary outlets for SGS coins. That is, either people that have been duped looking to unload this trash on somebody else and those people that have cut deals with Aboncom to sell SGS coins. We had, at one time, one of those SGS sellers in this forum who made these threads very entertaining as he tried to defend SGS. 4.) Tell 10 more collectors what you learned here about SGS (Star Grading Service) and Coin Talk. 5.) Then after all is said and done...as stated...RUN!!
At least in this case, you can be sure that the coins are pretty nice, assuming that SGS didn't get their fat, greasy fingerprints on the coins :headbang:
