I thought I'd take a comment by Beef from another thread and add to it since it might become a reference thread. 1794 B.4b (S-20) and B.5 (S-21) (wrong picture for S-21) 1796 B.12 (S-108) and B.13 (S-107) (wrong picture for S-107) 1798 B.36 (S-175) and B.37 (S-179) (wrong picture for S-179) B.43 (S-182) and B.44 (S-183) (wrong picture for S-183) 1796 B.9 (S-88) appears to be an example of the S-89. I'm not sure if the error is a wrong photo or if the coin itself is misattributed. Read more: http://www.cointalk.com/t195252-3/#ixzz1rpwii2oK
I posted the first four, and yes I am sure. The same picture was mistakenly used for both coins, it's particularly obvious on the S20 and S21 as the S20 is a head of 93 while the s21 is a head of 94. Oddly enough, each picture has a description of the coin with it's grade, die state, and pedegree, which for the mistaken coins does not match the picture. They had a specific coin picked out that they wanted pictured, but the wrong picture was used. This, combined with the glaring S20/S21 mistake which I seriously doubt Breen or Borckardt would have made, leads me to believe it was a mistake at the publisher, not one made by the author/editor. Last thing, I got the list from an fellow EAC member who published it in Pennywise, although he only noted the duplicates but did not, to my knowledge, confirm the errors. I don't want to take credit for his work, but I am not sure if he would appreciate me putting his name on here.
This is an S-88 from the Holmes Collection. Note the distance from the hair to the bottom of the legend, the lack of rotation of the B, the placement of the JHF closer to Y than T and look at the descriptions for each variety. Then look at the photo in Breen. It (The Breen S-88 photo) looks like a different S-89 to me. Now I think it is a photo error, but I don't see it used elsewhere like the other photo errors. http://www.icollector.com/1796-S-88-R4-Liberty-Cap-VF25_i8599164
The large picture of S-88 is definitely an S-89, and as Marshall says not the same one as they used for the large picture of S-89.
I can also confirm, I had one **** of a time attributing my new s89 last night until I realized that the picture of the S88 was really an S89
I thought I'd throw this in for those needing help distinguishing between Obv.4 (S-88) and Obv. 5 (S-89). Both photos are of coins in the Holmes Collection.
Two most obvious differences are the distance form LIBERTY to the hair, it is much closer to the hair on the S-89. Second is the junction of the hair and the forehead. On the S-88 it is centered between the TY while on the S-89 it is under the right foot of the T. O S-88 the L touches the cap while it doesn't quite touch on the S-89.
Another good attribution point between these two is the incomplete liberty cap on the right side of the S88. The liberty cap goes all the way to the poll on the S89.
