How do you spell rip-off?

I was reading a magazine when I saw an add for a buffalo nickel ring.

As a coin collector, I thought this ring would look pretty cool.

Wow....$129+$9 shipping. Well that might not be terrible, IF the ring was sterling silver.

I read the whole ad, and called, curious of it's composition. It did not mention it anywhere.

    $130? Okay....but ONLY if it's silver. I will pass if it's stainless.

I called and after 20 minutes of being on hold, I finally get a hold of someone.

It's not silver, it's not stainless steel! It's silver plated copper!

So this ring might look OK now, but soon the plating will wear off, exposing the copper underneath.

$130 for a copper ring with a nickel glued to it, I think I will pass...

Well, in 35 years of looking at advertisements like that, I have never seen one worth it. I don't know why you would even bother.

So both of you are saying the artistic design is not worth $138?

FYI, it's not a rip off unless they claimed the metal content was something it's not. The listing on their website is quite clear 24k gold plating, with enameled turquoise highlights.

No deception, and nothing that would infer this to being something it isn't.

Yeah, That is how you spell rip-off.

But really, why get so upset. It's not like that company gets its advertising for free and has no costs of design or production. I will even bet they provide pay for people to work. It could be worse. You don't have to buy it.

I never said it was deceptive sir, and agree its not deceptive, I am just saying coin related items, or coins themselves, I have never seen anything that appeared attractively priced in mass media ads in the last 35 years.

Most jewelry is a rip off and hideous looking. What do the kids call it these days, bling bling? I have a wedding band, that's about as far as I go with some type of metal attached to my body. ;)

That's pretty high even for sterling. A plain .925 band shouldn't run more than $20 or $30. Add the cost to make, the nickel, etc. and I still think $50 would be a little high.

I was referring to Detecto and Hunt. I was typing about the same time as you were and mine went in after yours.

Ok, so let me get this straight.. you saw a magazine ad for a ring and need to tell everyone about it? I highly doubt your sleuthing saved anyone from making a bad buy, so whats the point?

Are all your recent threads (re-gold buyers; newspaper ads; magazine ads) revelations?

None of this is new(s). Anyone with a little common sense knows to take these things with a grain of salt.

If it's too good to be true, it probably is....

But, that might be a revelation to you too.

The other thing Detecto needs to realize, is when you buy jewelry, regardless of from where, they don't sell it to you at spot price of the precious metal contained in the jewelry. They retail to cover their expense for the PM, and the artistic design, as well as make a profit.
