So opinions on grades, and also is up with this S. It looks like a filled S but I can not find a filled S for 1889-S Morgan. Is it a fake MM? Advice or thoughts appreciated.
Part of me also thinks it looks like a S mintmark on a lower grade coin after its rubbed down. But that dosent make much sense since the coins in pretty good shape overall. Meh nobody loves me enough to answer :/
Look at the time. You posted your question at 2:20 AM Eastern time. Some people are asleep at that time. I think it is a bit unrealistic to expect everyone to monitor the board around the clock so you don't have to wait even an hour for your answer in the middle of the night.
The mintmark does look like it has been mashed a little bit. There are only three RPM's mentioned on VAMWorld.......V4, V7 & V12. Since you have the coin in hand, you might want to compare it with them. I'm thinking AU61. Chris:devil:
Ok I just wanted to run to mintmark by you fellas. Because besides on the eagles chest and maybe the slightlest bit on high points of the hairline theres no wear ive noticed. So it just seemed unlikely the mint mark would be mashed so much. However the coin does have a considerable amount of small dings and bag marks so i guess it just took a direct hit or two on the MM.
as for checking for what VAM it if any. I havent had the time yet. I got a LOT of Morgans yesterday and just quickly sorting through them and taking out the prettiest ones and trying to take a few pics.
You second set of photos shows much more than the scans in your OP. A lot of distracting marks on both sides, i.e. scratches, is part of circulation. AU at best.
such a shame too because before it got all scratched up it was definitely PL or DMPL pics dont really capture the mirrored flat surfaces and the frosty eagle/head dosent really matter though cause its no BU
I will say high end au58 low end 55 also you may have an issue slabbing because i believe you have some PVC DAMAGE on th obverse near the stars to the left of the date. I cannot be sure though it could just be green crud or something odd. Nice morgan though..and i also agree the mintmark has some wear.looks totally genuine to me.
I dont see any prooflike qualities but i know sometimes a nice S mint morgan may appear semiproofish and yes thats my technical term lol
the few green specks are im fairly sure green candle wax. I have not taken it out of the slips since I got the coin. But with my 30x loupe it looks like candle wax to me. like 2 other coins from the same batch also had it. But upon close inspection it looks like flakes of wax and looks as if they would come off very easy. I may dip it because the oberse has that brown "dirt" kind of tone thing going on blocking luster.
imma post about 10 more fairly nice morgans later. No MS65s or nothing, but nice looking ones none the less. one or two got some beautiful mellow toning. Probably in a different thread though.
