Has anyone else seen this in the papers or heard of it? It talks about a tresurer who retired and is sell off all these mint bags of old coins. It's 97.95 for a unsearched 1000 old US coins bag, but it doesn't clarify coins just old us coins and has a picture of a 1886 Liberty nickel,buffalo nickel amd a 1885 proof indian head penny, . Do ya'll think these might be a good deal?or is it just scam with a thousand wheat cents in it.:rollling:
Yeah, I don't know why someone sitting on a gold mine like that would just randomly advertise in newspapers...at a low, low price! Of course, a full bag of BU 1886 Liberty Nickels would be a pretty nice deal...but you'd have to send them to NGC or PCGS to sell them on eBay...
These kind of scams have been around a lot longer than I have been a coin collector. Heck they may have been around as long as Doug has ....... no, they aren't THAT old, but pretty darn old. Rule of thumb, no one is your friend and is trying to make a living selling you $500 worth of coins for $97.95. Its nice to dream, but it never happens.

I sometimes read through these full page newspaper ads that claim to be "giving" away either coins, or safes with a small stash of coins inside. Looking at the ads, they're too good to be true, so I know they're rip-off's. About half of the time, I can spot how the scam works. But some of them are very well written and I can't seem to figure out what the catch is. Not that anyone would admit to it, but has anyone took the bait? (Or, known a "friend" who has?) I'm just curious what a person would receive in the mail.
I see these a lot in our local papers. It's marketing and garbage. They're trying to give the impression that there "might" be some key dates or rare coins in the bag. "Unsearched" is a marketing term used a lot on eBay and the truth is they are completely searched. NFN, but the 1000 old coins, could be well circulated wheat pennies worth only $10 and they're asking $97.95 per bag.
Or they could simply be any cents, not even wheat cents. 1960's cents are "old". Baseline, always read the fine print, and assume you would get the lowest possible value coins, and 99.9999% of the time I believe you would be right.
Considering the cost of taking out ads in newspapers across the countries, it gives a pretty good indication of the number of people that fall for this.
And not just ads in newspapers either. I get inserts with the sale fliers for local business all the time with the same and mailings as well. Most of the mailings I get come with a postage paid envelope, I always return it empty.
I JUST got one of those flyers in the mail for a giant sack of coins for $97-Im glad I came here to look first- I trust you guys WAY before i would trust these scambags! thanks for all the good info-
