Possible error with a 1960 Large Date

    Hi All,

I just recently got into collecting cents a few weeks ago. I hesitated posting this as I thought I could figure out what kind of error this could be through research, but that was not the case. Here is a picture of a 1960 large date cent with some issue on the memorial side (specifically where the word "ONE" appears). There is a groove/missing piece where the word one should be and the word one has been placed over this. I can tell this much as the top of the "O" and and the "E" appear on the flat part of the cent (the undamaged part), while the entire word covers the grove/missing piece. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The background on this coin is that I got it from a $50 bank bag from my local credit union. This came out of the very first bag I looked through! The only unfortunate part is there is a nasty finger print on the front and a small one on the back that was there when I found it. Either way I'm hooked for life.

If I need to post more or better pics please let me know.

Appears to have been struck through some sort of debris.

    Definitely a keeper! :)

I'm just taking a wild guess but I would suspect a lamination defect on the planchet prior to striking. Welcome to the forum!

Yep, that is a cool one-off error. Congrats!

Neat mint error. Out of the thousands of dollars I've went through in cents alone, have yet to find a radical planchet defect like that. And a nice higher grade 60 RB cent no less!

Thanks for the replies. Does anyone know what kind of value a coin like this has?

This type of error was a fairly common occurance at the mint during 50's and 60's, so the coin doesn't hold any tremendous premium... The coin is worth maybe a couple/few bucks to the right person, IMHO. :)
