I've been curious about how many others collect some type of animal coins. There are a lot of coins minted with animals on them, so somebody must be buying them. Personally, I collect the Australian Kookaburras and the Isle of Man cat coins. I also bought some of the Deadly & Dangerous series from the Perth Mint.

I collect any ancient coins I can find with rhinos, (trust me its very few), and collect some world coins with rhinos.

I have a small collection that I add to when I come across something. Australian, Canadian, Indian coins. I still find a few cents when roll searching, like the Pig cent from Bermuda. I don't seek them out, but I keep what I find.

Another animal found on very few coins is the hippopotamus. I have one coin depicting a hippo.

Here is one of my favorite "animal coins" depicting a peacock.

That's a cool coin. What country is it from?

I started collecting the Canadian Wildlife Series. Those are the only coins with animals on them that I own.

Actually, hippos are a little easier to get on ancients. Many a dealer, when knowing I was looking for ancient rhinos, have tried to sell me a hippo coin.

At least for ancients, (in case anyone was interested), I would say in order of frequency animals would be:

    1. Horse
    2. Lion
    3. Owl, (due to Athens)
    4. Elephant
    5. Harder to say, all get scarcer

I don't really collect specific animals on coins. But from time to time I do pick up world coins with animals on them. And I just happen to have that same peacock coin which btw is from Burma-Myanmar

For my part, and somewhat limited scope, I like the Canadian Wildlife and Australian Lunar II series. I find both series nicely limited :) and very pretty to have.
They are modern but add me to the list of those who like "wildlife" coins!

Hippopotami can be found on modern coins too. North Korea had one on their 2002 1/2 Chon coin:

One of my favorites is the 1993 Endangered Wildlife series 500 rupee coin from Nepal featuring the Bengal tiger:

Is there a 2012 kookaburra? I don't see them listed at the Perth mint.
