1966 DDR Quarter

Hey guys I need an extra set of eyes to check out this 1966 Quarter for possible DDR.

I agree, not seeing anything

 

It looks like it may have been made with worn dyes. Something about it just doesn't look right. I hate to say counterfeit, but that comes to mind when I look at the closeups. May just be my imagination.

Perhaps a few of you should look a little more closely at the United States of America and share with us what you see?

 

Maybe some would if the images were large enough to determine that the coin shows anything more than die issues. I understand what you are seeing and if willing to make the call on this alone, all the power to you. However, until I see more detailed images, my opinion stands.

 

Well, it wouldn't be a hobby if you didn't give opinions and agree to disagree at times. I go with Jim M on this one and say it is doubled.

Now for those who think it might be a "counterfeit". Why would anyone counterfeit a coin that is NOT worth the time to do such a thing?

I tell you what. If that is a "counterfeit. It is THE BEST job I have ever seen...lol

 

Hey guys it is not a counterfeit coin, I found it in a roll of quarters that came from my bank.I have another picture that shows a split in the R on Quarter Dollar.

 

It would be more helpful if you could show (or link to) a larger image of USA.

Good point, but I still find it better to err on the side of caution.

No offense to Mackwork, but it seems as if many people here see counterfeits everywhere. It's not that there is anything wrong with being careful and of course fakes are plentiful in some series. However, I believe it rather unfortunate that raw coins are often looked at with skepticism on this forum.

 

it sure does look like FS-801 in the Cherrypickers book

it says this is a very rare variety . so its not too popular to begin with

i couldn't find a picture of a graded example either plus clads dont get much respect anyways

Jpaul if you have a loupe check for split serifs on the top left of both the N and M of UNUM and the bottom of the last S in STATES.

 

Hey guys i have some close up shots of USA, look at ED in United it is bold on the inside of the D and the S has a little notch.

 

In my opinion it's the real deal. With the new pics you can see what I was talking about in my post above. See the red arrows.

 

Geesh - I didn't mean to upset everyone that I thought it might be fake. It just looked awful mushy to me. It may well be a DDR. That was the first time I've ever mentioned I thought something may not be genuine, and I too get upset with the trend by many to call coins fake. While this one is genuine, the Chinese especially will fake anything, even common coins, so just because it's not a rare date is no guarantee a coin is authentic.

True statement.. I have a counterfeit 1964D Jefferson Nickel.. Rather Crude one to boot.

I hope that no one was upset by your initial concern, nor do I believe it to have been an off the cuff remark. My comment on how people here often jump the counterfeit gun was in no way directed towards you. Just a general observation.

You may want to consider submitting this coin, even if only to ensure a fair price if and/or when selling, but the lack of detail will - most likely - have an effect on value.

WOW - the auction in my last post went for 625 today at the Heritage Auction

JPAUL's quarter would do alot better than a XF45
