Went through an entire box, $500 worth, found:

    1-1965
    3-1967
    1-1968

Also found a 2005-P that I save since it wasn't released for circulation (it's a normal business strike finish, so it must have come from one of the collector bags or rolls the mint sold) and a 1985-P that was in better shape than the one I currently have. One of the 1967's was extrmely brilliant and seems uncirculated or almost so, and I used it to replace the coin in mny set.

Had my brother help out after instructing him what to look for... to his credit he found two of the keepers above. This goes so much faster with help! Even though basically had a success rate of 0.7% based on what I found worth keeping, still that's 7 half dollars I got for 50 cents each and cost me nothing but time since I can still spend the ones not worth keeping. Spent $20 worth at the movie theater and Red Robin and re-deposited the rest at a different branch of my bank than where I got the half dollars.

Would love to do this again... however cash flow problems prevent me from doing it too often, lol... usually can't afford to have $500 tied up at once. However my bank has no problem oredering me a box of halves even if I don't pick up the entire thing at once, so may order another box and go through it about $50 to $100 at a time like I did the first time I did this. This time though I got paid early enough before my rent was due that I had the free cash to do a whole box at once.

Just finished first of two boxes. Really exceeded my expectations for both boxes on the 1st. Here is final tally for box #1: 3-1964s, 45 (65-69s), and 1 97S. Not bad. Hope the next box is as good. Will tackle the next box sometime next week. Will keep you posted.

I've been searching through halves for about 2 months now (up to about $15,000 worth), averaging around 2.4% silver, but today I got my first solid silver roll (all 40%)! I couldn't quite believe it as the teller was talking about how she collected coins... apparently she doesn't collect silver clad halves, for which I'm grateful!

I had about given up searching but reading through all 41 (!) pages of this thread rekindled my interest- thanks all for the inspiration.

and appearantly you have! I've read all 40+ pages as well, but I've been reading as they are written (this is the only post on the site that I subscribe to, lol) it's a little easier to keep up than to try to catch up, but this thread is worth it, imo!

two reasons, first they are very low mintage (in fact the lowest business strike mintage for coins released into circulation, 8.9 million for the P and 10.7 million for the D; the next clsest was the 86P at more than 13 million); and second they were almost entirely released into casinos (especially the P's) so they tend to be really beaten up. I think the 99P may end up being the key to the series in the long run. I've been able to find nice MS63+ uncs for nearly every date and MM combo from circulation, but the 99P is elusive in nice condition.

Got my box today and only one 40% in it. I hope the next one is better.

Went through two boxes yesterday, the first had 5- 40%, one from each year (65, 66, 67, 68, 69), probably someone's collection cashed in, though they weren't in any particularly great condition.

The second had 23- 40%, 6- 1964 and two Franklins, I was much happier about that one!

Nice finds on those boxes AgCollector.
I was walking back from the coin shop to the hospital yesterday and walked past a bank I never tried before. I only had $20 left over after the coin shop so I got two rolls. The first I found a 2002-D and second I found a 1969.
So not too bad for only two rolls bought. I'm going back today hopefully to get a few more rolls...jsut to see what I can find.
    Good luck to all.....

    Thanks!

Not bad! My average is somewhere around one 40% half per two rolls, so that sounds right on. I'll be getting 3 more boxes tomorrow, hope they have something nice.

    today's find

Well the half dollar trail is drying up.
Last Friday I posted how the tellers were very rude and practically kicked me out of three banks for asking to buy half dollars.
Today I called ahead to a branch bank I had been to before and talked to customer service.
Yes I have an account there. OK they have 3 rolls total. It took 10 minutes for them to do the paperwork and round up all 3 rolls.
Came home and went through 2 rolls of mutilated casino coins. :(

Reluctantly opened the 3rd roll. WHAT? Jackpot. Two 1964, Three 1966, Four 1967, Three 1968D and 3 Bicentennials in nice shape.
Just enough to renew my interest. Happy hunting!

Yes Bruce this blows all theory out of the water. My ship, SS Strategy has sunk. What was in that one roll has a melt value of over $23. Abandon all thinking. It has to be random luck.
This is a bank I went to and cleaned them out a month ago. Maybe they held back this roll on me last time ?
This particular chain of banks have been my most productive.
And the theory of going to small town banks is null also.
I went to a real small town savings bank last month, same chain, where I got that mint bag of $600 worth of halfs. That only produced one 40 percent coin out of 1,200 coins.
Yep today I only got 3 rolls. But one was a Bonanza.

It's getting tough Ag. The silver witches they call tellers are some of the most punative women on earth,
besides the ones I work with and my 2 ex-wives, of course.
Half dollars are to be hated, they think. And they think it best not to keep any in the banks.

Or maybe someone just turned in three rolls recently.

I do think it's mostly luck, but the more you can get, the better. My best rolls came from small town banks, but then again, so did my worst rolls. But even boxes are hit and miss- went through 5 last week and had one that was decent and 4 other duds. I did get a 1974 "un peso" out of one roll, first time for that. Probably not worth $0.50, though.
