Nice ink smear error. The note looks to be in Very Fine condition, so I hope the price reflected the grade. It's cool to get those though, so congrats!

I'd always take the error note over a 1923 Silver Cert, but that's just my preference.

I have never seen a smear! I have very limited experience with paper, but that is neat.

I've seen a LOT of them in circulation, especially at a specific time period, during the Clinton Administration maybe. SO many that i never even considered to remove them.

Most error notes I've encountered have been from the 70's and 80's when possibly quality control at the BEP wasn't at the standards they have now. I have an example very similar to yours from series 1988A.

Steve, I noticed that as well with the majority of my error notes. Series 1977 seems to be the majority of errors I see on ebay and Heritage as well.
