Ancient coin - ID ?

Good morning everyone,

Ancient coins are something I have never dove into and is faaar from my understanding so I have no clue when something like this comes to in collections I buy.

I know this is a beat up old fellah but just for my curiosity does anyone know were it came from and how much Pepsi cost at the time

It is a Roman Provincial coin of emperor Septimius Severus from the city of Philippopolis in Thrace.

 

Ahhh the wonder of knowlidge, Thank you very much for your help . Is there a aprox year on these ?

 

Nothing closer than the reign of Septimius Severus, AD 193-211

 

Man, impressive ID. I got Severus from the portrait, but other than that I had nothing.

 

Eh, it's just because I spend every day looking at coins. The only easy way to ID provincials (ESPECIALLY worn ones!) is to have seen them before.

 

I would have guessed Commodus

 

That was my first instinct as well, but the portraits of Commodus from this city are usually a bit more refined. But I suppose that, without a clearer portrait or any legend, Commodus is a possibility as well.

 

That would have been my second one. Not a bad guess.

 

I don't disagree about it being Septimius Severus.

 

Until you can provide a match to one emperor or the other, the coin remains unidentified. I would have guessed Commodus as well but who is an expert on this city? A die match is needed.

 

Fortunately, there is a die study on this city. I will check it at work tomorrow.
