Are there any women collectors here? What are the odds my daughter will appreciate my coin collection? Since she will probably inherit it someday

though not a woman I think I have some insight into this subject. I have 2 daughters, ages 10 and 11. I find that more than interest in coins they value time spent with dad. If we spend time going through coins they learn because they value the time together. Wether they continue later in life I can't say but I know that after I'm gone they will look at my collection and remember our time together.

Charmy the Penny Lady is a famous dealer. There is many female collectors but it is a male dominated hobby.

I give my five year old daughter rolls of nickels and she pulls out the boats and bison, while i do my coin activitys. I would like to continue to bond with her that way. I hope it keeps.

I think the "potential" is fairly great in that there are MANY Female Coin Dealers out there who have an intense desire to collect and appreciate coins.

I seriously doubt that they are in the "coin business" simply for the money since having a good eye is required for ANY successful dealer and a good eye is required for a successful enterprise. Good Eye's are developed, not inherited.

I am a 15 year old female collector and I don't think I would've gotten into the hobby without my dad. I agree, I was first into it just to spend time with my dad but once I started learning more about it I became very interested. If you discuss the coins with your daughter and express your interest in them she will probably follow suit...especially if she is a daddy's girl like I was/am.

I don't know what the origin of the male/female dichotomy is on coins vs. jewelry vs. art vs. clothing, etc.., but it is true that little boys like Buffalo nickels, macho coins in general that signify being a big shot, having money and influence, etc.. Women prize aesthetics, but of a different field, it is partly cultural, partly due to upbringing; I don't know if it's surmountable.

If you are looking for healthy social interactions, join some social group, take some classes at a community college or continuing eduction program, hiking club, whatever. Coins can be a lonely hobby, thankfully we have sites like this which allow 24/7 access to images and ideas. :)

I'm a 22 yo female collector. Got into the hobby after seeing a woman bring in a 1932D Quarter on pawn stars. I googled about rare coins still in circulation, and poof, here I am today. After discovering that coin collecting ran in my family, I've kept it going.

Not a lot of us out there. :)

I am on a few gems/minerals/jewelry forums, and I think the ratio on the "minerals" one is similar to coin forums, the ones on gems are closer to even and the ones on jewlery are mostly females. And the same "stone" can be talked about on each one. I learn more on the well mixed one, and wish that there was a better ratio here. When the ratio is badly biased, both sexes are prone to "struting and fluffing". IMO. :)

As mentioned, there really are not many female coin collectors, and I can count on one hand the actual female dealers I encounter. Part of that I feel is that coin collecting has historically been passed down from male to male. That being said, I do see more and more young women attending coin shows, mostly through the Girl Scout program, but many seem genuinely interested in looking at various coins. And I see more and more parents bringing their daughters to shows with them. There is no reason whatsoever that coin collecting should be limited to males.

Initially, I believe there needs to be something or someone that sparks the collecting interest in a person, like a parent or other adult taking the time to patiently mentor and educate a young person, showing them the intriguing aspects of coins, their history, their beauty, maybe some errors, along with their value. For me, it was the beautiful and intricate design of Indian cents that first caputured my attention, then it was the uniqueness of the different colors that copper tones. After that, it was discovering the value of errors and varieties that also grabbed my attention. But what really kept my attention was learning the value in collecting quality and low minted pieces!

So my advice is to open your daughter's mind to all aspects of coins, then find something specific about coins that grabs your daughter's attention and focus on that. Best of luck to both of you!

My daughter beginning at two liked to help me sort things. We started with football cards because they are not as dirty as coins, but I think she will have an interest in collecting. She has a few Ike dollars that I let her carry around and my wife put some half dollars in her Easter eggs this year. I imagine the interest level depends on the kid though. My daughter loves matching games and puzzles so she pays attention to details which may translate into her finding an interest in some kind of collecting. At the very least I might inadvertantly turn her into a hoarder like me.

Interesting topic...I'm a female collector since 2009. My primary interest is Conder tokens, (British provencial coinage of the late 1700's) mainly because of the amazing variety, and rarity. From there, numismatography was a natural offshoot so that I could share and discuss the tokens with other collectors.
Someday I will leave my collection to my young son, and I believe he will always cherish it. One thing I have observed over the years as a cointalk member, is that there are always new members who have recently inherited a collection, and they are interested in making a quick profit. That's just the nature of the hobby I suppose- there are those of us who collect, and others who don't see the point of it.
