Coin collecting has ruined my office...

Krispy, I fully plan on cataloging my collection with photos and written records. The last time the army moved us we had several boxes mysteriously "disappear" during the trip. Luckily my insurance provider allows additional coverage plans for things such as jewelry, electronics, and coins. I send them my inventory with pictures and i'm insured to the full amount, however even getting the value back doesn't replace those exact coins.

We often hurt the ones we love and it's often those closest to us that become our bitterest enemies, but this is all for another discussion apart from this thread.

Well it's nice to see that I'm not the only one AND the next time my wife says I have too much stuff I can just pull up this thread and show her how much worse it could be!! :D

    We've compare libraries. ;)

Listen, I know some think its silly to have such a library, but I am into a different type of collecting than others. I cannot just go to PCGS and look up mintages, or get an estimate on value. Heck, with all of these books, I had to go out recently and buy 3 more because I got some coins that NONE of these books covered. I still think my library is still at the "tip of the iceberg" stage, and I have hundreds of more books I would like to own.

Even saying that, anyone who thinks that just because they collect US or modern coins I believe is severely shortchanging themselves by not owning such books. Are you REALLY going to collect SL halves and not own WB? Are you REALLY going to collect large cents and not own the references? There is a real reason why the BOOKS are used as references, and not websites. Anyone can change anything on a website whenever they feel like it, books are permanent, exactly what you need for a reference.

I know many getting into the hobby feel books are a waste of coin money. In this hobby, however, knowledge means money. The more knowledgable you are the more you enjoy the hobby, and the better deals you will recognize.

Besides, my library has retained its value better than the coins, and the Chinese aren't counterfeiting them either!

Btw didn't mean to derail your post OP. I didn't have a pic handy of the mess of my coins, but I completely feel your pain. :(

Or kids, or relatives, or acquaintances. Its sad when something like that happens.

Sorry man if that happened to you. I would rather them just take money from the bank account than mess with a man's coins.

I just paid $60 for this coin yesterday and it's worth close to ten times that much. But the knowledge I needed to know why this was a screaming deal, on what otherwise looks like an overpriced corroded large cent, is only available in books. Seriously, waste a couple hours on the internet and see if you can tell me why this coins is worth $500:)
