On October 7, 2011, the Royal Canadian Mint and the Honourable Peter Kent, Minister responsible for Parks Canada, unveiled this special one-dollar commemorative circulation coin honouring the centennial of the founding in 1911 of the world’s first national park service, now known as Parks Canada. This unique Parks Canada 'centennial loonie' features stylized elements representing the national parks, national historic sites and national marine conservation areas of Canada, as well as the centennial dates, a hiker and a symbolic beaver.
