It has edge markings which appear to be impressed, but which are beyond verification or legibility. So I cannot say it is lettered rather than damaged.

I have seen another s76b with vertical markings on the edge. Similar to reeding, but not spaced in an orderly way. I was not sure if it was PMD or not, but looking at your 76a it could also have been a 76a with the lettering mostly worn.

I was considering the possibility of a lettered edge thin planchet. In other words 76a lettering on a 76b planchet. There are a few of those known, likewise there are a few thick 76a's that have plain edges.

I'll bet! If my calculations are correct, 1795 would be Doug's 5th birthday 21.gif

I was hoping that this was the case since the best known 76a is on a thin panchet. But there just isn't enough there to confirm it. It's more of a psychological test thing. You tend to see what you're looking for at times.
