Be that administrative role as it may be Ken, I think we would agree that the moderators of this site are generally more than just policing threads as they often contribute great insights, personal thoughts and shared experiences on the varied topics that come up for discussion. Their own passionate and analytical comments are well balanced, helping making this a decent place to discuss such topics that entertain us all in one way or another. We can't expect all threads to be stellar and all questions posed to the community to be the most thought provoking nor fully answered with any consensus for all members involved, but we do get enough good ones here that it keeps this a thriving forum and one under rather lenient and fair direction. :thumb:
Well 3 generations from now, I assure you that I won't be a MOD here, unless it might be the 10th circle of Dante's Inferno. Actually, lately, I keep thinking about taking a break and doing some other interesting things, but I would miss the regulars
I like the fantasy pieces, and the logic that you can not make a copy of something that never was. Three cheers for Daniel Carr, he brings some more fun into the hobby, It is nice to see the face of an old time dealer looking at a 1970 Dated Ike, or a 1964 Franklin. Some have had a sort of bad reaction once it is told what they are, but these are not copies, I would also shun Mr. Carr if he was producing 1895 Proof Morgans, or 1909s vdbs, such as some unscrupulous manufacturers have done. Just to add a little bit, of more gray to the discussion, what about the restrikes that were done on the midnight shift at the mint? Or the coins that were NOT supposed to exist such as the 1913 V nickels? I wonder since the 1964 peace dollars were all supposed to be demonetized, and also the 1933 double eagles, why the recent hoard of ten double eagles were confiscated, and any replicas of those are supposed to carry the word copy, why this does not apply to the 1964 Fantasy dollars? Unless it is because they are not sold as being the product of the mint? But if a coin gold 1933 double eagle were to be made without the word copy, as a fantasy piece, or a 1913 V nickel if those particular coins would be considered to be confiscatable?
Mr. Carr has information about this on his website in the product's description. Other coins like the 2009 Proofed Silver Eagle also bear DC's hallmark or personal mintmark which is just enough alteration to the restruck design elements of a legal tender piece from the Mint to offset them. Many of his coins employ a craftily and discreet design difference to distinguish them from an attempt to be exact replicas, and further to help in identifying them as fantasy pieces and not deceptive replicas meant for ill gotten profits of the unsuspecting buyer.
I feel similarly about many modern products offered direct from the US mint, as well as many past designs from the history of US coinage. That's the great thing about collecting, no one is forcing anyone to do it, it's a personal decision, each and every item we put into our possession is a choice we have to weigh and make to the best of our informed abilities, but any decision like this must be based on facts, so when one feels compelled to declare their stance publicly on issues such as this it is all the more important to have more than an opinion as the OP wished to based this thread on. DC's fantasy pieces often draw a lot of misunderstood reasoning for those expressing their disinterest. Until all collectors and dealers are fully versed about the differences in terminology used to describe these particular pieces, we will have to endure more discussions vetting out the differences, which go beyond peoples opinions, that are otherwise used to sidestep agreement on this topic in light of the facts.
It's all about the money. Demand is created by limited supply. There are just enough people who think they are "cool" to drive the prices up and fill Mr. Carr's pockets. Nothing would make me happier than to see the Chinese start creating duplicates of Mr. Carr's "art-work" and selling them for pennies. Just my opinion.
Just an opinion only gets you so far, and so far you've only fallen in the same erroneous pit as those who mislabel DC a counterfeiter. You clearly haven't enough facts to have any objective understanding to discuss this here. What's more, your shockingly admitted pleasure to see someone whose hardwork, originality, passion and success be undermined because when it comes to money and you haven't enough to play with, you'd rather see someone who made a successful effort be brought down to your own poor level of self standards. You further implore the very notion of what DC has worked hard to avoid, creating counterfeits, creating mass produced dreck for profit and potentially in large numbers to his own peril should those mintages be further misconstrued as an attempt to subjevert the currency. Your comment isn't an opinion, it's a deplorable diatribe exposing a personal distortion of reality! The skewed logic of this is that you come off sounding revengeful at the fact that everything in the world isn't accessible to you at low low big box-style retail bargain prices and rather than work for something until you can afford it you opt for the cop-out excuse to air your own sad state of affairs. Readers can only speculate about the root of your anger, but it's clear it touched you in a financial sense. However, for you to bring it here just because you crafted some sick idea to single out someone who is honest, hardworking, original, and making a return off a private business venture doing something he loves, gives you no right to wish ill on another's status or success because you lack the same. FYI, go back and check the links provided in this thread. Please read about the fakes that already exist of Carr's own works which have presented a challenge to his operation, success and for those collectors seeking his works on the secondary market. You really seem to be missing out on a lot of points here. Similarly, your understanding of his choice of mintages DC creates also needs some adjustment. How much he decides to mint can be attributed to a few combined factors, like: how much starting capital he has to get an idea into production. That alone limits supply and the demand from his collector base does the rest to quickly buy up the inventory as they demand and seek his work. This is every bit as much as the same thing as collectors who snap up new US Mint offerings as they roll out, only the US Mint can produce enormous mintages even if demand isn't present at the time a coin goes on sale. A national mint happens to have the budgets and materials and sales projections to work from. Other factors, how many individual collectors and dealers he must serve. By his success we understand that he has an idea of how many individual buyers he has and how many bulk buyers he has to create a mintage to fulfill their needs without loosing his profit due to overhead and labor, etc. Furthermore, please appraise yourself of the discussion we've already had in this thread, where we suggest the mintages are also kept low, not artificially to suggest demand nor to inspire a profitable sell out, but rather to avoid the issue that his work could be misconstrued as attempts to subvert the currency by minting too many, which is something that led to the downfall of the NORFED operation. The depths of ignorance on this topic and the willingness to share such ignorance with the public is just astonishing! With such a grudge as yours, so confused and bent out of shape about the economics of this, perhaps you'd be better suited to a hobby other than numismatics, something that won't impede in your sensibilities and budget to turn your attitude so sour against fellow collectors for the things they enjoy collecting. It is indeed about the money as you say, just not for the reason you tried to level here behind the guise of opinion.
I always get a kick out of these threads because you can be sure that the mere mention of DC always brings krispy out with his sword drawn ready to do battle with everyone who doesn't see things his way. He attacks anyone with breast-beating zealotry if they don't agree with him. Quite some time ago, I happened to disagree with him, but I never called DC a counterfeiter. As a matter of fact, I did say that he is very talented, but I just don't like his "knock-offs". The result is that I have been blocked by krispy ever since that day, but I'll let all of you in on a little secret. I really don't give a damn what krispy likes or doesn't like, and that includes me. Chris
He seems incapable of discussing an issue without resorting to ad hominem attacks. I put him on my ignore list and am much happier.
I defend this topic with facts, deflect the hacks and will inform you that you were never on my blocked list. You are simply another sore-looser who was once or twice corrected for your careless comments. You have since never dropped your grudge you bear for having been called on your inconsistencies. The secret as you put it, is rather, that you step in messes all the time. We seen plenty of your 'apology' comments and entire apology threads in which you try to sweet talk people back to your favor as you backtrack your way out of them with coy follow ups or stepping into a thread, such as now at this point suddenly to say nothing effects you, not even facts apparently... but it's not that hard to wipe clean your footsteps as you retreat from your sticky faux pas. They exist in forums for those who can see through your constant barrage of jesting bull, to interpret for what they really are. At this point, in this thread, enough facts to the contrary of the negative opinions expressed towards Mr. Carr's work exist now, such that any further opinion negatively expressed about it, is simply a failing on the behalf of those opining who continue to do so in utter refusal of informing themselves that these works are legitimate, and that they are not counterfeits seeking subversive nor fraudulent gains. No further comment is necessary to defend his work for those who would or have taken the time to understand the factors that differentiate his work from something else a few would have us believe his works are on par with. I meet plenty of insolent stubborn comments on this forum, particularly on this topic, by those who refuse to discuss anything but instead delight in deviant distraction of playing the offended party with opinions-only who drag these threads down into flame wars. Let it be shown that cpm9ball, has just entered this conversations with a past grudge, a load of distorted perceptions about my comments and himself giving no facts to counter mine, presenting himself as some sort of victim but an impervious one unwilling to explain how something unique can be a "knock-off". He offered this thread nothing but another useless personal opinion with a negative application of "knock-off" to announce his deep thinking on this. Past threads have shown his comments consistent even when DC himself has stepped in and quieted every other negative point posted about his work and the legality of the issue. Your "opinion" based comments only stand a few casual posts until they are met by facts, when it's by me, you think you can have a fight and call me a zealot but when Daniel steps in, it is very interesting to see you scurry away real fast. This is just another repetition of your factless commentary and careless mannerisms.
We all know as the OP that your 'opinions' couldn't be farther from the truth, and as this comment demonstrates, you have nothing, as usual to add to the topic being discussed. Until then, enjoy forum life on ignore, ignorance is bliss afterall. BTW, hows that poll of your's looking concerning fantasy vs counterfeit?
Slightly off topic: I just received an email from Daniel that my "Arthur's Liberty" has been minted and is ready to mail. I can't wait to show you guys!
It appears a few people actually believe DC's coins are "counterfeit". It amazes me that members of a coin forum fail to understand the meaning of the word, despite repeated posts explaining the difference between "counterfeit", "replica", "copy" and "fantasy". I guess some, in their ignorance, will always lump them together.
Now, calm down, krispy! When you get mad, you start making grammatical and spelling errors which just show that you're not as perfect as you think you are. We wouldn't want that to happen, now, would we? The fact that I offered no argument when DC "chimed in" on the other thread only indicates that I do respect him. You, on the other hand, are an example of someone whom I find very hard to give that same consideration. Of course, I've made mistakes, but I'm not afraid to admit it. Any human being capable of forming a thought, expressing an opinion or taking some type of action would be a liar if he or she claimed never to have made a mistake. Perhaps you are super-human or sub-human. I don't know, but instead of admitting any possible human frailty, you prefer to belittle others. This is where I draw the line where you are concerned. Who made you the counsel to God? So, you claim that you have never "blocked me". Well, maybe your intent, based on the screen capture below, was to block the entire membership of CT, but it still indicates that you have no desire to discuss anything privately, and you prefer to air your "dribble" in public. Chris
I'm far from mad Chris, and I've never claimed to be perfect and this is not about me as much as you wish to change the topic and spotlight me rather than discuss the topic of the thread. As for what you consider blocking, you have to be on my contacts list to send me private messages. You have never solicited me as a friend nor asked to add me as a contact so until then we cannot trade PMs. I will gladly correct that by sending you a contact/friend request. As for blocking, that would be akin to the 'ignore' list. Having opted in my CT account settings to only accept PMs from established contacts prevents any random unknown member or spammer from sending me PMs, thus I have never blocked you Chris. TheCoinGeezer, however, I have placed on ignore and despite his saying he put me on ignore, seems to be reading a one sided discussion now when he "likes" your posts about me... evermore the off-topic misanthrope shedding that grand illusion of perspicacious-ness he likes to flaunt about. I also see no reason to discuss anything about the topic of this thread in private as it concerns many people and their thoughts on the subject. I'm so happy to know you think my effort to discuss this topic is just dribble to you!
Can't figure out if this thread makes me want to buy one of dcarr's coins, or send out warnings to people for childish behavior. Maybe I'll just go back to enjoying my Easter and hope you guys don't make things worse.
Don't worry, Peter! We're just voicing our difference of opinions. I hope that is okay. Happy Easter for you and the family! Chris
LIKE, LIKE, LOVE, LOVE, this comment! A+ Peter! Everyone has their opinion and putting down someone else will not make yours more "right" than it was before. On that, my opinion is that Carr's work is incredible. I would really like to have one, but other people like them tremendously more that I do. I'm not willing to pay that much for a fantasy piece. They equate to a token or medal in my opinion and I would under NO circumstances consider them a part of a series collection of U.S. Minted coins. By the way, I'm an Ike Nut, and Carr's Ike's look wonderful. He did an excellent job.
