I thought this might be a variation of the 5 until I got a picture. It appears to have been stamped poorly. Damage after the fact is possible, but I can't detect any blemishes in the area where the loop of the 5 should be. Is this a common error? Sorry for the poor picture quality. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks for the replies. EDIT: To clarify, since the picture is poor: the "/-shaped" brighter line where the loop of the 5 should be is not raised above the rest of the lettering/numbering at all. I am guessing that damage which pushed the loop of the 5 that way would both leave behind evidence of the loop of the 5 and would also create a raised/distorted clump of metal.
I think it's PMD from a coin counting machine. Take my opinion with a large grain of salt, I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination.
This is pretty much what it looks like to me, except I'd say it was hit by the rolling mechanism of a rolling machine.
This is caused by the crimping fingers that close the end of a coin roll. you will find many other years with similar damage to the last digit.
