So do whitman folders ruin coins? I have a set of kennedys I store in the blue whitman folders. Are they going to ruin them? Also if they are what album can you recommend that is reasonable? Dancos look nice but spending 30 bucks for a coin folder is not my idea of a good time.
If he is talking the fold up type folders, no they are not good. If he is talking about the whitmans with the side windows then you have the same toning possibility as the Danscos. Is that ruining them? Depends on how you feel about toning and how they tone. In either case they can damage the coins if you let the slides rub across the coins. And the environment you store the folder in is probably at least if not more important that the folder itself. Coins stored in a poor folder in a good environment will probably survive better than coins in the best holder stored in a poor environment.
I was talking about the cheapie 5 dollar blue folders whitman makes. Would I be better off using Mylar 2x2 flips to store my favorite coins over the other stuff for long term? (i realize airtites might be a bit better but 50 cents a coin isnt my idea of a fun time)
2x2's and flips are all ok. Air-tites to me are the best for long term, plus they now make tubes designed for air-tites, so it makes storage much easier. http://www.jpscorner.com/cap-tube.htm
Not long ago I transferred all of my Indian Heads and Lincolns from 50 year old, low cost, "thumb-breaker" Whitman folders to Dansco, and saw no damage to any of the coins that were kept in them that long - no corrosion or anything else. My Buffalo nickels are still in the old Whitmans and look fine. My Mercs however do show some signs of tarnish on them.
They are definitely not a good idea ! Is it a fun time for your coins get scratches from either staples or cardboard dust ? Is it a fun time for that cardboard dust to cause ugly spots on your coins ? Both of those things, and more, happen with the 2x2s. Any little thing that happens is gonna cost you way more than that 50 cents if you ever go to sell those coins. Now THAT is a brilliant idea ! You were very, very, lucky. You were so lucky you better go buy a lottery ticket !
I think there's a bigger issue than whether they will tone or not. If they do tone, only one side will tone, or they will tone differently. That may be undesirable to have different toning on the obverse or reverse.
Lucky maybe, but even the AU cents from the 30s & 40s looked fine. Most were circulated when they went in, but I was quite surprised to see that the AU coppers weren't toned or negatively affected in other ways. The higher grade ones were kept under better conditions.
My Kennedys are in them too. Mainly because I dont want to have to store 3 large albums for a relatively low value set. Ive thought about taking them out and just stacking them in order in rolls. Its best not to go cheap on supplies. Since 2008 Ive spent hundreds on supplies. Once you have the stuff you have it though.
Whitman folders will change the color of your coins over time. I have an old Kennedy collection that I did in the eighty's these were all fresh out of the roll, now they are a dull gray. I don't know if the high humidity down here played a part, but they are ugly. You gotta give em some credit though, they were the first and are recognized by many as being what started their coin collection. Remember when you finished your first Whitman Memorial Cent collection?
Yeah I remember having a lincoln cent book and a dime book way back when i was a kid. I thought they where awesome and to me those little whitman books where worth a million each . As for buying tons and tons of airtights, danscos and all that over simple 2x2 in some plastic pages. I think its kinda silly to spend 30 bucks on holders for a set that cost me like 50-60 to make. Sure the set is worth more then that but to me for that 30 bucks I could go get 3 more franklins and start on a franky set. If I collected some MS65 capped bust half dollars I would totally use a bunch of airtights or such. I manly just collect Kennedys and junk/ semi junk silver that sometimes happens to be AU or BU. Honesly thought I kinda hate the whitman books for conservation cause I know I had to have at least rubbed one or two of my kennedys to push them into those stupid holes.
lol, some people are SO dramatic......I so get a kick out of them. I have had pennies, nickels, dimes, halves and Ike's in Whitman folders for well over 20 years and they look great. Now, common sense is alive and well when using this type of folder and snapsalot, I think you have right idea. I would only put AU/low MS coins or below in this type folder. Quite simply, they are fun, easy, and cheap. I also believe where and how they are stored is the biggest determination of what they will look like in a few years. Also, if you're popping them out 3-times a week to check them out.....well........ Lastly, if anyone is putting MS 64+ coins in a fold type whitman, I would say that's a mistake. Otherwise, chill out, have frosty beverage of choice and enjoy your collection.
Well a few of my silver kennedys and the 2000 or newer ones are probably ms 65-67 my 70s 80s and 90s kennedys are only AU or low BU. Iono I may take them out and put them in 2x2 flips. Or maybe one day ill find a really nice folder for cheap used off ebay and ill xfer them to that. But for now Imma just leave em in the ol whitmans I guess.
For cheap I like sa-flips. The mylar is a little different, in that it seems to "seal" a little better than the competition. Only in a very special situation would I use the cardboard thumb breakers/device scratchers.
