Online Order Mistake

So, I recently order a empty blank 1.25in Dansco album from a well known online dealer, the cost was $7.99 plus $7 shipping. I almost bought a couple other things because shipping was so high but I decided not to. I couldn't find the album anywhere else for cheaper anyway. Well, my package arrived today and inside the box was not an album but a 1.25in slip cover. I packing list said album as did my receipt. They simply made a mistake.

Honestly, I kind of wanted a slip cover but opted not to buy one in my original order. I have not contacted them yet...but I'm sure they will tell me to send it back (at my cost probably) and then they will send me the correct thing. Since I don't mind having the slip cover, I feel like trying to contact them and simply explain the mistake they made. Tell them that I could use the cover and ask if I could order the correct album and see if I can get free shipping (the slip cover also costs $7.99). Frankly, if the shipping hadn't been so high I would have ordered both anyway.

Does this seem like a reasonable thing to request? I'm a little annoyed that they made this error but it's not the end of the world. I just want the album I actually ordered.

Edit: They should if they are well known just ship you what you originally ordered, and tell you to keep it. Otherwise, send you a prepaid label to ship it back after you get your album.

Sounds reasonable, and easy! My guess is they'll cover the shipping if they are reputable. Have them ship you what you wanted, with them picking up the shipping.

    Very reasonable!!

    Cam,

This happened to me once with JP's Corner. I called Jerry and explained the mix-up, and he just told me to keep the incorrect item free of charge.

Suggestion: When you call and explain the mix-up don't mention that you would like the slipcover anyway. Wait and see what the person says, first. They may offer to let you keep it. If not, then you can opt to pay for it if you wish.

If you call them, they should have no problems working with you - so long as you are reasonable and I mean so this deal costs you nothing. However, at those prices, take a close look at what you ordered. My guess is that you really ordered a cover. That price is ridiculously cheap for a 1.25" Dansco album. They should be something on the order of $25 - $30 (shipping included.

The first thing I did was double check the order and confirm it. Here is a direct quote from the email I got confirming the order:

This was an empty binder with no pages. The website lists the "list price" at $10.95 and their price at $7.99. From what I have been told, this is a reputable dealer and I have used them before. I will call them tomorrow and see what they have to say. I have avoided mentioning their name because I don't want to throw them under the bus for what I presume is simply an honest mistake.

If it's their error, they should make good on it without causing you extra expense. Let us know how it works out. And, even if they do the right thing, you should consider letting us know who it was. Especially if they do the right thing, let us know who it was, we don't get enough of the positive reviews here about companies.

Exactly. You should expect that your order is made right with no extra expense to you at all. If I were the company, since the slip cover is so cheap anyway versus shipping it back, I would tell you to keep it. However, you should not "expect" that. You are entitled to make them pay for shipping it back, and have them ship to you for free the correct product. Anything above and beyond that is their good customer service.

Very reasonable. This exact situation happened to me with a non-coin related purchase.

I too had actually wanted the item that was sent to me in error, and although they said it was mine to keep free of charge and that they would send the correct item free of charge, I offered to pay for the error item.

I mean everyone makes mistakes and this is a specialty business (The Wokshop) that I want to use for future purchases...so in wanting to see it around for many years to come, we agreed on a fair deal that minimized losses to the seller and kept a satisfied customer.

Great point. I had a seller on Ebay recently tell me a coin I bought had already been sold, and it was an error that coin was listed in an auction. He offered to pay me 3 times my auction win price as consolation. I told him that was gracious, but I refused any money. He is one of only 2 dealers that regularly sell coins I like, so I need to make sure I am on his good side, plus fair is fair, everyone makes mistakes, so why punish him other than the loss of the sale? It could have been me making a similar mistake.

As a plus, he promised me when he gets another one of those in he will sell it direct to me for my auction price. From an honest mistake, we both know and trust each other more. Turn lemons into lemonade. :)

Recently they shipped me the wrong airtite album (cards that hold A class rather than H class), told mehe didn't have H class no longer in stock and he would give me a refund if i ship it back. Rather than go thru that hassle i told him it was alright since i would have eventually needed the smaller airtite holder cards as well.

OK, I called their customer service line yesterday and was unable to speak with someone and had to leave a message. They returned my call a few hours later...unfortunately I was unavailable to take the call as I was seeing a patient at the time. They left me a message on my phone and explained to me that they would ship me the correct binder immediately. The person also said she was unsure if I needed to return the slip cover but if I did they would include a shipping label with return postage in the package with the binder.

I have been hesitant to reveal who the company is because I didn't want to throw them under the bus and then have them make it right. I don't want to slander someone without cause. Once this gets fully resolved and have the binder in hand, I will say who it is.

Or it could be Brooklyn too, or a few others. I had good luck with Brooklyn, but it sounds like the company Camaro is dealing with is doing it right, and deserve to be named when they take care of him properly.

So far they are doing everything right. Everyone makes mistakes, but it's how we fix those mistakes that define us. I fear that if I name the company before the whole issue is resolved and thus not have all the facts...I might give the wrong impression of the company, either good or bad. So...once everything is done I will give a complete and concise explanation of exactly what happened and how they took care of it as well as who it was.

To my gusto, it is a lack of respect until they alleviate it with physical evidence (relating to something like energumen, vertigo, etcetera). They may not have evidence; however, in consonance with various companies that send junk advertisement to someone's mailbox, they can probably send a letter specifying that an inconvenience was by their part. If what has been ordered doesn't arrive, then the order never arrived. Therefore, I wouldn't waste time nearing the same request in a consecutive opportunity. One should simply consider buying from another source. (Money isn't worth my dignity.)
