hy guys. today i browsed through the jefferson nickels at my local coin shop (where i was falsley accused of stealing and will never return to again) and i came across the SMS coins from the mid 60's. i think they are beautiful examples of jefferdon nickels, so i bought some to use in my BU year/mm set. Does anyone else use SMS to fill the philadelphia slot in your sets? is this wrong/unorthodox? thanks for any input! _Ryan
Are talking about using SMS coins in place business strikes? If so, yes.. its totally wrong and unorthodox. If you do you'll be banned from coins for life. Seriously though, your coins and your collection so do whatever you like.
its only "Bad" when you put problem coins or counterfits in the slot and try to pass them on as something they're not. Putting SMS coins is actually unique, and a good idea. Should be a very good set once complete, good luck .
thanks guys. i knew that it was my choice i was just wondering your thoughts on it. i will definitly post pics when im done though!
Hi Ryan, good to see you here on the boards again. In most "type" and "series" collections, the SMS coins from 1965-1967 are grouped together with proof strikes. They were specially handled strikes, separate from their "Philly" brethren produced for regular circulation. That being said, if you're filling an album of a series of circulation Nickels, the SMS coins don't theoretically go in the slot, but as others have said you can fill the slot with them if you'd like. I agree with you that the SMS coins are really gorgeous coins. I'll leave you with a picture of my 1965 SMS dime.
I bought the SMS sets to break apart to put each in the other sets I'm putting together. I consider them BU coins, which I'm putting together for Jeffersons, Roosevelt's, Washingtons and Kennedy's.
Didn't you get an SMS in the packet I sent? If not let me and I will look again..hmm I am not sure if I have doubles now lol.
I see no problems with it, whatever makes you happy is fine. Just keep in mind if you do put them in a album or folder they will tone.
IMHO coins will tone in any holder, airtite, album, et al. I'm no expert and from what I've read here in CT natural toning happens for a variety of reasons. Whether due to impurities in the planchettes or outside environmental conditions. You can only slow it down.
