Hello all, First let me say there is a huge amount of knowledge on these boards. Thank you for that. My son likes to collect coins and we have gleaned a lot of information on here just lurking and reading. I decided to register because I have a question about a coin we came across. From what I have gathered it is a 1980 Gold 100 Dinars Iraq, honoring the Battle of Gadissyyat. It is marked on the coin as a 22 Kt. Here is my problem. I have taken it to several "dealers" and each one has given me a different answer. One had told me it was a lead fake plated in gold, another has told me it was only 20 KT gold and said it was worth scrap. One said it was nothing more than a bronze junk piece from the middle East. Can anyone give me information on this? It's history, composition and worth? Thank you. Forgive me, but the picture below are from the one and only website where i have found the coin, and it is exactly what I have.
Welcome to the forum! I suggest you find out how much a real one weighs and weigh yours, that in itself should answer your question. My guess from what you've presented here is that your coin is most likely fake. good luck, maybe I'm wrong. :thumb:
Thank you. I managed to find 1 place online, globe coins, that had one showing sold. It provided a little bit of information on it. It showed the weight and the I weighed the one I have..same weight. It also listed it as the dinar value being what I listed. It also showed it as being a proof? To my understanding that is a test run of coins right? Took it to 2 different jewelers today and they did a test on it (hooked it up to some kinda little meter that told the Kt of it) and both confirmed it was 22kt. The only other info I have found was there was a 1 Dinar that looked similar, only it was silver and more of an octagon shape. And one 100 dinar that looked exactly like the one I have only it was silver. I dunno, this thing has me stumped.
It's not 100 Dinars, or a coin. I do not see a denomination anywhere on it and it isn't listed in Krause guide. Probably a Medal, You should take it to a reputable scrap place and have it acid tested for possible gold content.
