I got four rolls of quarters today so my son and I could work on filling the quarter Whitman folders he got for Christmas. One of the coins we found was a 2022 S Sally Ride quarter. It is in great shape but doesn't look like proof to me. So my question is what is this exactly? I am a world coins guy and I don't follow closely what's going on with U.S. coins these days. I thought all S coins since the 70s were proof. What is this and why is it in a roll? Do they make circulation S quarters and release them to the public?
Nice find! It seems they made proof and regular strike...: https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin/2022-s-25c-maya-angelou/899391
News to me as well. I didn't realize San Francisco was issuing business strike quarters again. (Like you, I'm primarily a World coins guy, and don't follow modern issues very closely.) Nice find!

The US Mint started making business strike quarters at San Francisco in 2012 but they weren't released into circulation (only offered for sale at a premium from the mint). These are still being made today. It looks like someone decided to cash one in at the bank. https://www.coinworld.com/news/us-coins/san-francisco-mint-strikes-circulation-qualit.html

One piece of advice I got for coin photos was to put it on a bottle cap to make it easier for the camera to focus so that's what I did here.
