Are 2009 Jefferson Nickels worth that much??

I just blew through $60 in nickels last night, come to find out I didn't get one 2009 D or P. Then I did some snooping on the bay and saw these to my amazement! Remarkable since most modern circulating stuff doesn't appreciate that much.

Roll Searchers: What's your normal find ratio for these rare nickels? Per box?

Are they worth that much? Apparently so....since someone paid that much.
Will they be worth that much in the future? HIGHLY doubtful. Yes, it has the lowest mintage in the last 40 years, but it still had over 40 million struck.

 

They were selling for ten times that roll price when first out.

 

The guy who paid $37 plus $7.35 shipping.......was he on crack? I'm not a roll searcher but I'd like to think you could get these in rolls from the bank at vastly reduced prices......or an I on crack?

 

Well Green, I don't think you have a drug problem. The guy is obviously making a few bucks on shipping. And yes, every alleged full roll of unc. 09's P & D's are selling in the mid to upper $30's, not just this roll. I don't roll search as much as our brethren on the roll searchers forum, so it was just a curiosity search out of the blue. It's crazy though.

First off, 2009-S is proof only so you are highly unlikely to find these in a roll unless Junior raided Papa's coin collection. As it turns out, most of the Denver 09's went into Doh-bama's strategic coin reserve. Quite a few Philly's were issued in Puerto Rico and a few other places. Right now, the prices are speculative just like the 1950-D was. Imagine being able to trade a roll of 50-D's for a brand new 1950 Pontiac. It was true in the day. Later, the price fell to more realistic levels.

I have found five 09-P's in rolls so far.

I read this and broke out the red book. It says 39 some million and 48 some million. If that is rare, then all early american coinage didn't exist. It is however, low mintage in context of recent ones, but, eh, I wont try to understand why 37 and change is a price paid.

 

In his description, he said it was trending 1.50 per coin. 1.50x40(in roll)=60

So whoever bought that got a "deal":devil:, because we always believe descriptions, don't we?

 

I think that when news of the 2009 Nickel came to whoever had rolls of them decided to hoard them. They may be minted less than other years but I doubt they are rare. And I really believe that somewhere out there somebody is sitting on hundreds of rolls just waiting.

 

I have no doubt that the 2009 coinage will always command a premium over other years due to limited mintages, but some of the prices paid on ebay are a little out of control. I personally did what I said I wouldn't do and bought these on ebay (for reasonable prices), because they just aren't circulating like previous years.

 

I've only found a single 2009P out in the wild! The 2009 dimes were a bit hard as well, but I did eventually find one of both mints. I definitely look for that year when searching through nickels and dimes.

I really know very little about numismatics, esp compared to you guys. Im like a first grader. Back about 2 yrs ago (and still earlier) I was buying gold and silver bullion like it was going out of style. Fortunately, it has appreciated quite well, especially when I first started and was getting 100 oz of silver for less than $1200 (now it runs about $3500). I somehow came across the 2009 nickel rolls phenomenon. I studied it just a bit, but not at places like this forum, which I should have. Anyway, I ended up buying about 70 uncirculated rolls at around $25/roll. I've seen some recently go for about $35/roll, if I remember correctly. I should probably sell mine and get out while I might be ahead, but Im just too lazy. I just dont feel like ebaying. Too much work. I guess I'll hold onto them into retirement, which should be 20+ yrs from now. I have a feeling that although they might get me $'s 25 yrs from now, those 2030's $s might be worth a lot less than today's $35. Oh well, it is what it is...

 

P.S. Ill probably end up giving them to my kids and ask them to hold them unless they are desperate for money. Then maybe they can pass them on....and on and on

 

Don't give 'em to the kids. They'll sell the rolls for $2 a piece........
