I have had this 1864 small motto two cent piece for some years now and never noticed anything unusual about it. But recently, I decided to put my two cent pieces into a dansco album and realized that it has a medal alignment. I have done some searching, but I cant find any reference to this variety. Does anybody specialize in two cent varieties here that could shed some light on this for me?
Rotated die errors are quite common among 1864 2c pieces. Even ones with medal alignment are not all that rare.
I agree with Mike. The 1864 cent and two cent pieces were produced with both coin and medal alignment. I have a set of each that was fairly easy to put together.
Looks like a large motto and there is one variety of 64 LM that always comes with a 180 degree rotation, and that variety is VERY common.
Kevin Flynn cataloged a RPD with 180 degree rotated reverse as KF-L7-RPD. You might want to examine the date digits closely.
