There is going to be an auction near me soon and they list a few gold coins which I will not be able to afford. They also list "a lot of mercury and roosevelt silver dimes" but they don't list dates. They also listed a 1932 D Quarter. The photo only shows the front of it. Bear with me and assume that the reverse is in the same condition as the obverse and assume it's not a fake, what would be the highest you would bid on this? From the PCGS photograde I'd say this is somewhere in the VF grade but it's hard to tell with this picture. Also, how would I tell if the mint mark is fake? Again, I won't be able to see the back of the coin until I get to the auction. Thanks.
I would tend to stay away from such a dark coin simply because it is too easy to hide tampering. Especially on such a highly counterfeited/faked coin like the 32-D. If you determine that it is a nice example, I think a good buying price would be in the $180-200 range.
I'd never pay that much for this coin. The current price on Numismedia is $74.75 between VF20 to XF40, although I did ask for opinions and thank you for giving me one. I just didn't think anyone would give me that high of a figure. I suppose that if I look at it under a loupe I should be able to tell if the mint mark is fake....hopefully.
Wow! I haven't collected this series in a long time, but I cant believe that it has dropped that far. PCGS price still list for $300 in 40. I know it is an over inflated price guide, but I cant believe that it is that far off.
Well, I know you can't always go by price guides, but since this will be an auction I am hoping to get it far below the price listed in price guides. I did find a site explaining how to tell if it is fake. I think I might get a more powerful loupe before I go. I am going to try to determine if it is fake or not. If I decide that I really can't tell, I won't be bidding on it. I don't know what you are looking at, but $74.75 is the price listed for G4, 149.50 in VF-20 and $240.00 for XF-40 from your site.
I was wondering how it could have fallen so suddenly in such a widely collected series. My price may seem a bit high, but it is what i would expect to pay at a coin auction. Estate auctions, on the other hand, I would expect to pay less. There will simply be less competition at an estate auction.
Ahhhhhhh.....ok, I had to click NO FRAMES and it lined up. Before I clicked it all the prices were moved to the right and the $74.75 was showing between the VF and XF. Oops. OK, forget my earlier replies. lol Well, now I am happy knowing that the prices are higher than I thought! Now if I can determine if the coin is real or fake, I am still hoping to get it at a good price, although at auctions you never know what will happen. I'll set a price as the highest I will bid and hope it doesn't go higher, but like I said earlier, if I decide that I really can't tell if it is real or fake, I won't bid at all. I will be studying a lot about the fakes in the next few weeks before the auction.
That's really too high for a raw, circulated 32D. I know it's less than 500,000 in mintage numbers, but you can find these raw for less money, like $60-$75.
All it takes is some aggressive shopping. I've seen several raw 32Ds in the same condition at the local show near me recently one was listed for $65 and the other $72.50.
