I'm not really sure what to make of this coin. Found in a roll a few days ago. The front has the faint outline of Jefferson and you can make out the year of 2007. There are little raised lines all across the obverse. The reverse has Monticello with an imprent of Jefferson's outline. BUT the outline is from the previous design of the Jefferson nickel. My thoughts are that it was a squeeze job turned bad. I would, however, like some additional input. Thank you all.
My main concern is the fact that it looks like Monticello on the reverse is on TOP of the Jefferson stamp, which wouldn't make sense if it was a squeeze job. If you click on the pictures, you can see some larger resolution images.
I can't understand the coin. Monticello sure looks like it is on top of a reverse image of Jefferson. I'm trying to understand how someone could make something like this.
Definitely a squeeze job. The obverse is the current portrait of Jefferson and the impression on the reverse is the original portait by Felix Schlag.
I am confused as well. If someone could explain how a squeeze job could cause Monticello to be on top of Jefferson I would greatly appreciate it. Don't get me wrong, I am not under the impression that it is a real error; I just do not understand how this effect would be created.
I am not sure if this is p.m.d I can not see any reverse lettering, and how did the monticello get on top of the jeffison.?
Weird coin - the edges of the pressed profile image are lower than the surface of the coin, but the center of Monticello doesn't seem to have been pressed, unless the photo just doesn't show it. Maybe the coin used to make the impression was altered before the press job?
Stamped blank? If it dropped out, wouldn't it be blank without lines then (also why is there an outline of Jefferson's head)? Have you seen vices before? The lines on the coin for certain look like the lines/grooves on a vice that help hold a grip on whatever is in them. Also, Jefferson's mugshot outline is reversed, which only tells us further, someone grabbed another nickel and squeezed these together.
yes i have seen a vice and it is like the lines on one. But its also like the lines on milled flat die piston, that has lost its stricking face. Jefferson in revese may have been made by two coins in the bottom die been struck at once and then one of the coins was struck again by the faceless top die making the monicello on top. the lines and the mon
Why oh why would anybody even entertain the thought of this happening at the mint? Jefferson's image is incluse, the lettering is mirrored... two nickels were placed obverse to reverse in a vice.
The Nickel design changed in 2006, so this would have sat in the Mint after being produced the first time for over a year. The second thing is that the the little bit of rope design looks to be from a Canadian Nickel & the two rims look completely separate from the photos. Still an interesting coin and would probably have some value.
I also noticed that in the last photo that the image of Jefferson is actually incluse. Look at how the building sank as the reverse image was pressed over it.
