I have a 20-coin tube of 1986 American Eagles that I bought in 1986, I was thinking of submitting them to have them graded. Think I could look thru them and determine if they have a chance or send the whole tube in? I have a Magnifying Lens I can look at them. And after opening the tube should I wear gloves or just handle them on the rim with my fingers. Or am I wasting my time? Thanks for your help, Jim
What would you intend to get out of the coins by grading them? The expense would be significant based on the market value of the coins and what most people consider these coins to be, bullion. If they are indeed bullion (unc) version ASEs, then you would be wasting both your time and money to have them graded. You would be eroding the value you have earned by holding them since you originally bought them, especially now that silver has risen in spot price since then, if you were to add more expense incurred by having them graded. It's good practice to wear clean, lint-free, cotton gloves when handling coins, but if you don't have any, then yes, only handle them by the rims.
Jim, it is my opinion that you shouldn't submit modern bullion for grading for two reasons. One.....it doesn't (MHO) add much to the value and Two......it's gonna cost you a bundle to get those 'babys' graded. One more thing.....I don't know how the TPG'ers get the coins out of the mint tube (I suspect they slit the plastic somehow) but if you try to remove these coins you run the risk of dinging them (the packaging is so danged tight).
It would be a waste of money for any of those that would grade MS69 or lower, and if you can't tell if any of them would grade MS70, then I would suggest that you just keep your money. Chris
Keep them in the tube and every time you need to cheer yourself up, check out the current spot price of silver and remember what you paid for them back in 1986. :smile TC
