2005 P & D Business Strikes (not Satin Finish): Should We Collect These Too?

I wonder if future coin albums will have holes for both the satin finish and regular business strike coins for 2005 and 2006, etc. providing the U.S. Mint continues issuing only satin finish coins in their mint sets?? I buy the Kennedy halves and Sac dollars + all state quarter and nickel rolls, which are non-satin finish, from the mint along with the SMS mint sets; but I also bought non-SMS P & D cent and dime rolls from banks as well. Anyone have any info or opinion(s) on this? What do ya'll think?

I think the dimes and cents will be something because the mint did not sell any rolls of these, and it is a hassel to track them down. As for halves, dollars, quarters, nickels the mint pumped out millions of these directly to collectors.

I haven't compared them side by side but do the satin finish coins really look that different from the business strikes, esp ones straight out of the roll.

Just collect! That is, of course, unless it could be expected that 2005 business strike "bank" rolls may equal or surpass those values of 1982-83 coin rolls; i.e. to say, those years during which no gov. mint sets were issued!

They DO look somewhat different, at least to my untrained eye. I was under the impression that the mint issued the satin-finish mint sets for collectors, and that the regular issue coins for the year would not have a satin finish. Could anyone please confirm or deny this premise??

Honestly wouldn't have been able to tell the difference had you not told me which was which... the satin finish, to me at least, just looks like an ordinary business strike in better than average condition.

Correct... starting in 2005 they minted satin finish coins for uncirculated sets. Normal business strikes are still minted for general circulation. If you buy any of the bags and rolls the mint sells, you get the normal business strikes; only the uncirculated mint sets have the satin finish.

Better condition, and to me the satin finsh coins look to have an almost "matte" finish, as opposed to the "shinier" (if that's a word) business strikes.

Can anyone find out the total mintage for these sets, then we'll know how many of the "SATIN"S" there are available????

All you need is to find out how many 2005 mint sets were sold. I think the satins will indeed be worth a premium eventually as thousands of mint sets were destroyed to bust the coins out for individual sale. I was a little disappointed that the supposedly 2007 Red Book didn't even mention them. Time will tell. There is MOST definitely a difference between the coins and you don't need a trained eye to see it.

I tend to agree with your opinion regarding the 2005 satin-finish mint sets' potential for appreciation. I feel that virtually all mint sets and many proof sets will appreciate in the future for the same reason- i.e. many have been busted up to fill holes in collections or for third party grading purposes.

Your posts, as always, are much appreciated. As for "don't need a trained eye to see it," well, from the responses to this thread, some of us must! I've been collecting coins for some time now, and I'm still asking questions of others for confirmation to what I "see" and guess I'll keep on "training my eyes" indefinitely. :)

If you pull up my picture of the Kennedy's,then click the image again to supersize it and then tell me you can't tell the difference,I have some reading glasses to sell you:D . The satin one has 4 way luster lines and reflects light in a different color. That being said,it IS somewhat difficult to tell them apart from a good satiny looking business strike under normal light and no magnification. With dimes and cents,it's really darn near impossible with the naked eye.

I dont like the satins that much, they do reflect color differently and I dont think its nessesarly a better way. I think the stain screws up the natural luster of the coins honestly.

    Unless you're Superman.......

Yep, magnification really makes a huge difference in coin collecting. Regular eyeglasses help, but nothing beats a good ole 10x loupe!

Considering that there is definitely a DIFFERENCE, I shall therefore be compelled to collect both the satin-finish and the business strike issues. I wonder though if the album makers will provide holes for both???
