Does anyone else get on eBay and look at coins in the 5 digit prices that they know they could probably never afford? Every now and then I hop on eBay and look at some really nice coins.
Yep. Interesting how much some coins can go for, or what people will bid them up to. Sometimes it just gets ridiculous.
Oh yeah. I also troll Heritage archives as well. It's neat to see the rarest, most desirable coins. Often times those listings lead me to learn more about a particular coin series, and that knowledge has been applicable on plenty of lower priced purchases.
Look at, no. Aware of, yes. Since my coin budget doesn't reach into the 5-figure range I see no real use in dwelling on those sort of coins. Their prices won't drop down to my level of affordability. But I do know which 5-figure coins I need to complete some of my sets. 1856 FE for instance. And a group of coins struck in the 1790's needed to complete my type set. Actually I do own one coin that I paid 5-figures for. It was the last one I needed to complete a set. I had to gut my stamp collection to get it.
It's fun to dream. I am looking at buying several coins in the 4 figure range this year though. By the time I get them, I'll have spent 5 figures.
Have you ever opened up threads knowing there won't be anything of substance, but you look and post anyway?
Nope, I only get on eBay when I'm looking for particular coins I intend to buy. It'd be like driving daily to the Ferrari dealership to look at cars I can't ever afford, you're just torturing yourself and in my opinion, I have better things to do with that time.
yeah.. and sometimes if it is BIN or best offer.. just to feel like I am important I will send in a really low offer.. lol who knows.. maybe one day someone will take my offer.. lol
I do it all the time. For the most part, the coins at the top of the list are relatively common coins with some idiot asking for way too much for them. But sometimes, truly world class coins are there. At one point a couple of years ago, there were two 1804 dollars for sale.
I'm afraid I'm all out of feesles at the moment. Guess I better go spend an hour or a day looking at the high priced ones on eBay and see which one I want to spend my next 50,000 dollars on.
I don't usually look at them on eBay, but going to lot viewings for the Goldberg and heritage auction before the last long beach show ,and looking at the patterns and other coins that I will probably never be able to own was fun and I would reccomend to anyone interested in coins regardless of budget. Didn't cost anything to hold and examine 4, 5, and 6 figure coins.
