I like his display of mid grade barbers, and I've never cracked a slab. What if for display purposes something was created which could present slabbed coins in an album fashion? Perhaps it could fold into a briefcase or something. I've always thought of slabs as a museum preservation capsule. The dansco is very nice though.
I use dykes along the long edge of the holder, about a third of the way from the top. On NGC slabs, it usually produces an arched shaped crack in the plastic extending from the point of contact to the top of the slab. I then do the same thing on the other side followed by fishing the coin (and insert) out the top of the holder. PCGS holders usually require many more chomps with the dykes, but determination insures the coin will come out.
How's the ICG slab going? I have a couple i've been wanting to crack but not sure how to go about it... Whats the inert material like?
I've heard the opposite from some folks, but I've never had to crack an NGC holder. Actually just cracked a Morgan out of a PCGS holder today, and it was a real pain. Eye protection was a must, FYI.
Takes me a good 20 mins to do a NGC slab, not even half for PCGS. And agreed about eye protection, i try to look away...
Well I was impressed how flexible it was, and impervious to breaking. That is until I pryed it the right way and it completely split in half. As if it was never sealed.
Depends what you mean by preservation. Dansco's have been known to tone a coin quite well. Me personally...I'm good slabbed or raw. I don't really care that much.
