I owned one of these over 10 years ago: http://www.teletrade.com/coins/lot.asp?auction=1241&lot=1982 Also: http://www.teletrade.com/coins/lot.asp?auction=1257&lot=2049 Personally I thought it was undergraded, though I had bought it in a VF35 holder, small scratch on obverse was the reason for lower grade IMO. There is much controversy on this coin due to the Civil War effects and the fact that the South and the North both had authority over the mint at various points in time. The price on these puppies has exploded in the last few years with GS running at $15K. I see Apmex has had one listed at their site for quite a while priced over MS60 bid:smile: http://www.apmex.com/Product/66870/1861_O_20_Gold_Liberty_Double_Eagle_AU_55_PCGS.aspx
Not really a coin that can be priced by sheet. Too bad you didn't hold onto it. Nice coin to have owned.
Still from a money perspective, gold and silver have done better in XF grade. If you sell a coin you like you may get another chance to buy it at a reasonable price.
In the last 12 years even well-performing rare coins like this have been out-paced by precious metals. 1660/255 = over 6.5 (gold) 15000/2750 = 5.5 (1861-O $20 Lib. XF) Plus it is a lot easier to buy and sell PMs.
