There will be a need for currency and coinage in many types transactions (legal or otherwise) long into the future. Who ever heard of using a debit/credit card to buy a gumball from a machine?
Sure halves are way smaller than Ikes, but how old was your cashier? Chances are good that he has seen darn few halves and may have never seen a Ike in his life. They never circulated that much and they stopped making them almost 35 years ago. If he was a teenager they stopped making them at least twelve years before he was even born.
True story. A friend spends $2 bills. He was in a mall food court and tried to pay with 3 $2. The clerk got the manager. Manage looks at them, and tells him, "you better get out of here, you and I both know what you are doing". Friend asks, "what do you mean", manager says, "man, don't make me call security". My friend, seeign where this is going, laughs, "yeah, please call security". Security guard arrives, and manager, in a stern face, informs him, "this guy was trying to pay in TWO dollar bills!". Security guard, I guess being a collector, asks, "any good dates?". So, if you want to be fast in line, maybe not play with the idiots too much, but if you want the possibilty of some free entertainment, its worth a shot! Chris
I pay with half dollars a lot if I have them in the car since we're always roll searching. I can't even count the number of times I've paid in half dollars and had someone try to give me back half of he coins saying I gave them double. People confuse half dollars with dollar coins all the time around here.
If you go to Monticello, they will give you change in two dollar bills. At least the last time I was there, that is the way I got change.
The scary part is someone that stupid is actually running a business... if someone working for me is that dumb I doubt they will be working very long.
Why are you calling him stupid? Because he hasn't seen a two dollar bill? A note which for all practical purposes doesn't circulate. We are collectors, we know about these things. A large segment of the population has never seen half dollars, small dollar coins, Ike dollars two dollar bills, and probably ATB quarters. When the first state quarters showed up they made a big hoohaw because it was the first change in the quarters in three generations and almost no one alive had ever seen anything other than a normal Washington quarter except for the Bicentennial. I guess if you were a non-collector, didn't know these were coming out you got your first one and didn't immediately recognize it you must have been stupid. No not stupid, just uninformed. Something that can be easily cured with a little education.
