Went to a coin show today in Jaskon, MS and purchased a 2001 PCGS MS 69 WTC Ground Zero Recovery Silver Eagle for $49. I've been looking for one on e-bay for months but the prices were to high. The guy I purchased it from said he didn't know how much to price it at after receiving it. I thought it was a good deal. He was happy and so was I.
You got a VERY good deal for this coin, especially one dated 2001 and graded MS69. As with all coins, you have a piece of history and in this case especially, a historical moment in time. The Comex vault was located in the basement of the World Trade Center that contained around two hundred million dollars of gold and silver bullion that survived the collapse of the towers. On the night of November 1, 2001 as the work proceeded on the ground zero clean up the workers made there way to the vault and with little fanfare a caravan of Brinks armored trucks hauled the bullion to another Comex vault. Some of the silver eagles and a small amount of gold was sent directly to the PCGS. These coins were sealed in their holders with a certificate of authentication certifiying that the coin is one of the few that was excavated from the World Trade Center site. I own a 2001 silver and $5 gold piece recovered from the Comex valut to remind me and my children what islamic terrorists did that day and why we are at war with these people.
I've been looking into getting one of these for a while now and noticed that some are slabbed from others than PCGS. I found this one on ebay from IGC and am wondering why the price as of now is lower than the one slabbed by PCGS? The holder for the PCGS is nicer than the IGC. Could that be it? Were there other coins that were taken from the WTC site to others graders than PCGS? Thanks for any info. SB http://cgi.ebay.com/ICG-MS69-2001-W...ryZ39488QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Only PCGS had access (for grading purposes and validation) to these recovered coins and the only way ICG could put that notation on their label is if one was breaking out a PCGS WTC coin for a ICG "cross-over". It doesn't make sense???
Thanks for both of the responses. I didn't know that IGC tends to overgrade the modern coins and also about the PCGS graded WTC coins. I knid of figured that with all the ones I've seen. I don't understand myself why someone would do a crossover from a PCGS to IGC. Probably sent it out to IGC & hopeing for a higher grade upon return. Thanks again, SB
All coins from the world trade center was grade by PCGS at first all coins just got graded Gem Uncirculated, later coins where graded MS69 and so on. The first coins coming out people buying them thought there where more money in the coins if they where graded MS. So people started to send the coins to other grading companies. The result was a coin without the original american flag coin holder the original coins from PGCS was certified in. The end result was a coin of less value no matter the grading it got. Because it lost its original coin holder from PCGS.
