Hi, I'm new at this so please be patient. I recently purchased a 2008 American Eagle Silver Proof on eBay. I have several silver proof eagles in different years. I'm a little concerned because the box lid has a white label on it with a bar code and numbers. None of my other coin boxes have a label at all. Do you think this box is from the Mint or is it an after market box? The other printing on the box matches my other US mint boxes. Thanks for the help!
not sure....i have a few ASE proof's and none of them have any sort of bar code on the box and I don't know of any reason why some of them would but my knowledge is far from extensive on the subject.....could be that something happened to the original box and someone had to rebox it....i would imagine that someone on this sight will know as there seems to be an expert for every field on this forum at time to time.....good luck
First, welcome to the neighborhood, Pam! It's nothing out of the ordinary. You see, until 2006, the only Silver Eagles you could get from the Mint were the proofs. But, in 2006, the Mint began issuing an Uncirculated Eagle with a burnished finish and the West Point mintmark, so they had to add the label to identify which is which. Chris
Please post a photograph so that its clear what you are referring to. I've purchased Silver Eagles since 1986 and have never seen a label on the box "lid". Welcome Pam.
These are the boxes for the 2006W, 2007W & 2008W Burnished Eagles. Note the 3-digit alphanumeric code that identifies the year. Chris
Only 1 of those appears to be on the "lid" and I believe she was referring to Proof SAE's. Identifying labels were always on the bottom of the proof boxes. Again, she needs to post a photograph so that folks know exactly what she is referring to.
It doesn't matter if it is on the top, bottom or side of the box. One employee might use one method, and another employee a different method. It doesn't matter that she was referring to a proof coin. In those years I mentioned, they would need labels for proof and uncirculated. Otherwise, they wouldn't know which was which. She doesn't need to post a photo. Chris
Well I guess that settles that then! Especially since nobody has a clue if what she's refering to is even a US Mint label.
