I am just wondering what others thoughts were on this coin in terms of the so called "altered surfaces". Personally, I strongly disagree so I have already cracked it out and submitted it to NGC but haven't received it back yet. I have looked at hundreds of pictures of this coin on Heritage and actually discovered that PCGS does not have a single G$1 coin with an MS PL grade but NGC had over 180 on their website. Would PCGS slap an "altered surfaces" grade on the coin just because they don't recognize this PL variety? Either way I saw several coins that appeared to have much less genuine looking surfaces in my opinion. Let me know what you all think as I am very curious. The pictures might me tough to tell and I'm not sure how to make them larger.
You have got to be kidding if you think anybody can grade better than pros with just the images given. In fact grading from any images is next to impossible on that small of a coin.
I have to agree, we can't tell anything based on those pics. But if PCGS said altered surfaces, odds are very good NGC will say the same thing.
No guarantees from the small images but I do think it looks polished, especially the image of the reverse.
I agree with the previous two posters. I have never seen a gold coin that shiny naturally. Not even fresh from the mint. I also believe the coin was polished. I really wish the TPG would label these non-grades. I think it would greatly improve customer relations if they gave people an idea of what they believe is wrong with it. I wonder if its the dang lawyers again, advising them if they are specific in what they believe is wrong opens up them to liability if it is not exactly that cause. Chris
