Its a type 3. Islands are present west of florida. Here's a good source: http://www.supercoin.com/iketypes/
I agree with all above posters. It's a type 3. The islands relative to Florida are a much better indicator than the shape of the earth. At least IMO.
so anyway its a type 1? I'm asking the question knowing the answer and I have another part to the story.
The T-1 Florida is no more stumpy that T-3. They point a little differently, but shaped very similar. The T-2 is much more stumpy than either IMO. BUT, you're also missing the point. You have a Type-3 1972-P coin! If ANY part of ANY of the islands BELOW Florida go past the West Coast of Florida (to the left of), then it is a Type-3 coin. Yours clearly goes to the left of the Florida coast.
I just want to make sure before I call NGC up and complain. I sent in a bunch of Ike's to be graded. Two of them were 1972 coins. I have picked these coins up over the last year from shows. The only reason I bought them is because they are type 3's. So I send some Ike's in for grading and when I get them back both of the coins say type 1 on them. I don;t get it they look the same. I looked at Florida, looked at the earth and looked at Cuba and the islands. They were in my mind type 3. I posed a pick of the one here to make sure I wasn't losing it before I called up NGC and ask them what they were thinking. The straw that broke the camels back is the 1976 Type 1 that I sent in. Nice coin the label came back saying 1976 D Type 1, go figure. When it rains it pours. I broke out a nice 73 D that was in a NGC holder that was ms 65. I think the coin is a 66, it comes back as a 64. I'm so frustrated with not just the QC and simple mistakes like getting the types and mint marks right, I'm now starting to wonder about the grading I hope they control the grading better than the labeling. Maybe its time to join PCGS.
NGC definitely screwed up. Mistakes DO happen regardless of the grading service. Be SURE that NGC Refunds your shipping costs when you return the coins for "correcting".
Wow! That would be SO frustrating! I hear more and more of mislabeled slabs and it does make you wonder what the grading QC is like if they can't even label the slab correctly.
Your basically paying premium dollars for an opinion and only an opinion where mistakes are made. Are you gonna sell these? If not, don't or never bother getting coins graded by TPG's.
