I just bought a couple night 8-reale coins and a half dollar size medal. The coins are raw, and I usually buy slabbed coins...so I am kind of in the dark with what holders are good to get for something like this. I want to get something that will protect the coin as best as possible and ideally preserve color as best as possible. I don't really have a budget. I'd appreciate any suggestions (and links if possible) I appreciate it guys! Thanks
No holder, not even the sonically sealed TPG slabs are air tight. Your best bet would be a typical direct fit or ring type air-tite holder. The "slab" holders aren't all that effective IMO>
I think I was just using "air tight" as a general term. Like I said, this is a new area for me. I guess the basic question is what is the best way to store a loose coin? (for protection, and viewing) Thanks!
2x2's and flips are good for short term storage, or lesser value coins. If you plan to have a coin in your collection for a long time, or it is higher value, air-tite holders would be better. http://www.jpscorner.com/AirTite_Products.htm
I'm working on converting to these: http://www.lighthouse.us/epages/lighthouse.sf/en_US/?ObjectPath=/Shops/leuchtturm_us/Categories/US/US_2281/US_2396 Looked like the best combination, for me, of protection, price and presentation.
The Lighhouse coin products are fine. The capsules are priced very reasonably and you can usually buy them in bulk. Just make sure the size is correct. That tray however, is pretty expensive, the cheapest I have seen $22 each.
Yeah, I'll be using the 3-ring album pages which are $3.50 each, same price as their pages which hold regular TPG slabs. I like those, too! http://www.lighthouse.us/epages/lighthouse.sf/sec4dJK7Sa_jc_/?ObjectPath=/Shops/leuchtturm_us/Products/ENCAPQ So, capsule plus display works out to about 70 cents per coin, which I think is dandy.
