Hello all... I know it's been discussed a bit here before, but I'm having trouble finding the exact link...so I'll ask for assistance. USPS just delivered a group of 132 Canadian silver five cent pieces I bought from the LCS back home...time to try to put together a set and search for varieties. Any recommendations for good websites? I have a digital copy of Krause...and a web link to CoinsAndCanada...but I'm sure there are other great resources. Any help? And I promise photos of anything cool I find... Thanks!
There are several good websites, but I would suggest picking up a copy of the 2010 Charlton It has 150 pages of silver 5 cent coin varieties. Picking this up first would help you narrow out the obvious varieties, and then you could poke around forums for the more difficult to attribute coins.
Thanks! I've gone through, added the 18 I already had (makes an even 150 coins) and I'm only missing 8 dates (1871, 1875H, 1884, 1887, 1894, 1908, 1909, 1921)...pretty sweet! Definitely some nice keepers in here...and I should be able to sell the rest to make my money back. (At least, that's the plan...)
Well, that was quick. Apparently there is a variety for the 1858 that has a die crack around 3 o'clock of the obverse...and I definitely have one of those...
Just thought I'd post a link to my photo album of coins (so far.) It's a work in progress... http://www.flickr.com/photos/saintlouisdanceartist/sets/72157629302937358/
Thank you, sir! (And wouldn't it be sweet to find a 1921? In a related "wouldn't it be sweet," the LCS back home called me with a 1905 Canadian Half that someone brought in...asked me if I was interested. I said, "OF COURSE!!!!" They sent it in to get graded...and unfortunately it came back in AU50...(they thought it was a high VF/low XF)...which put it out of my price range. I think they were considering offers in the $4,000 range for it...but yes, that would have been amazing!)
Very awesome collection! Can't wait for you to finish! Are you going to try and collect as many varieties as well?
Nice collection. I admit I tend to like these. I like earlier Canadian, up until about 1950 or so. For some reason I have gotten a lot of pretty toned AU/BU 5 cent pieces in lots over the years, so I have more of these than probably any Canadian coins I own. That has probably skewed my perception of which ones I like.
Well, first I'm going to image what I have. Then, once my copy of the Charlton gets here, I'm going to see if there are any hidden gems. Then I'm going to put together as complete a set as possible...and then sell the leftovers. I have to admit, I'm curious to see what the market for these turns out to be. Seems like quite a few have gone through a harsh cleaning at some point...but, as it stands, I'm okay with keeping all these little silver coins. Especially the higher grade examples!
