I used to collect coins years ago and I still have a few from those older days. I have this blue dime from 1946 that I found in the late 80's. I joined this forum to ask you guys and gals what is the cause of this blueing and to see if I have a rare dime. I am thinking of selling it and have no idea what its value is. could you please help? Also I want to see my silver quarters, 50 cent pieces, worn buffalo nickles and Eisenhower dollars. It is better to see these 2-3 at a time or one by one? Thanks
That 'blueing' you refer to is called 'toning' by collectors and could have been caused by numerous factors relating to the way the coin was stored, such as in an old manila coin flip or in an old Whitman coin folder. Toner freaks go Ga Ga over such coins depending on the degree of toning and the condition of the coin. Not being such a 'freak' myself I'll leave the determination of value to my more learned colleagues on this forum but I'd like to bid you welcome to the community here......
That particular toning, with the grade of that dime, wouldn't command any premium over melt value. Also, welcome to CT!
Yes, it looks like Whitman blue to me. I would agree that it won't add any value as much as I wish that it did. I've always down graded my Whitman blues.
I love toned coins myself. But your 1946 is not in great shape and only the highest quality of that date demand any real premium. Here is the same coin with a little bit of premium.
