It's been electroplated, probably with rhodium, a cheap metal that looks like silver.

i didn"t think about that and it makes me wonder why a person would do that when people spend so much time collecting coins and to riun a quarter by changeing it's wrong but i do thank you for your info

I think it's wrong, too. There are companies out there that plate coins with silver, gold, platinum and other metals and selling them to unsuspecting people as collectibles. They make them sound like they will appreciate greatly over time, but when those folks find out the truth they just spend them and they show up in circulation. Lots of them show up here, posted by folks that think they've found a treasure.

Rhodium isn't cheap, it's about as expensive as gold.

That is not a very nice thing to say about any group of people!

Scruffy, despite what rascal said I believe also that it is electroplated. If you are not sure, take it to a local dealer. Good Luck!

In my earlier post I made a typo error , I said don't listen to folks on here and I meant to say don't listen to some folks. I didn't mean to say all of them because there are some folks on here that do know about error coins. I went back and corrected my mistake.there is absolutely no way that me or anyone else can say for sure that your quarter is electroplated without a in hand inspection. It's possible that your coin could be on a foreign planchet or even maybe a silver planchet intended for the silver proof quarters. I have heard of this but have never personally seen one. you may want to ask Mr. Wexler or some other good coin person about it.
