Absolutely. Some coins show wear better than others. The Morgans wear well. Others, like the SLQs, do not.
Not me - to each his own, but I will become giddy over an uncirculated example that is crisp. Toned or not, if the strike produced those razor sharp devices, that is what does it for me. Circ'ed Morgans aren't bad - they are just so much more available. But they do wear nicely - like a Barber (of any denom)
I've been carrying around a circulated 1879-s with the rest of my pocket change. It just wasn't doing anything for me sitting in a drawer. It's amazing the comments you get from people. I've been enjoying it for about a year now. Pretty cool.
It is the little things - isn't it! I had a 1882 O (VF) sitting around when my little brother came for a visit. He practically drooled all over the coin, and I offered it to him. You would have thought I offered the finest rare coin on earth to him - and to him I did. Nice feeling, and as we looked through other coins he left with a few more examples. I think I just became a "coin pusher". I swear these things are as bad as heroin - only without the negatives of addiction!
No addiction? Ever hear of the registy sets? If that isn't an obsessive compulsive disorder, then it is certainly an addiction.
No I meant the negative charateristics of addiction. I am quite thoroughly addicted to little shiny objects!
I agree, the worn Morgans show there age well. Other silver coins such as SLQs, Walkers, and Mercs, which are beautiful in high grades, look really lousy below VF/XF. Also, Buffalo Nickels look OK in circulated grades. I have an 80% complete set in VG-VF which I put together 25 or so years ago when I was a kid and it looks very nice. I'm now starting a set of BU Buffs (have about 8 now) but will never part with the old circ set!!!
ive gotten about 5 morgans recently and i agree they are a very nice coin just remind me of old western movies and train hold ups for some reason. ya can imagine how many times they ones youve got had been part of bank robberies ect. you cant get that feeling for uncirculated ones that have never left a bank vault. 5 cents are so ugly compared to them.i must say though the most lovley coins are the old english ones like the crowns such great obverse they have, the silver sixpence is fantastic as well. and anyone would give there whole collection away just to own a cothic crown what a superb coin which by the way is always voted the favourite by all english coin collectors let me find a pic
http://home.att.net/~p_lord2/images/ebaycrown.jpg this is what the american that posted this picture had to say about it I have spent some time studying coins, from Roman to modern. I have spent a fair amount of money buying coins. I focus on my favorites, like the Morgan dollar, and I am happy to say that now, as I near my 60th birthday, I have examples of almost every coin I think is historic, aesthetically pleasing, or has some special meaning for me (such as the coins of my childhood). Not always in perfect, or even very good, condition. But still each an historic artifact representative of its type. But the coin I think is the most beautiful coin ever minted I will never own. It simply is too expensive. never a truer word
there it is by the way this sold on ebay for 1000 usd would you rather have a half decent morgon or that
That is a gorgeous coin. I hate to sound daft, but what is it? From reading it it appears to be an 1847 British something (a crown, florin, or pound)??
yes its the 1847 crown it is regarded as the nicest coin ever made in the uk was only about 8000 made some were made oin 1853 as well. a sovereign was done like this too,let me find a pic
The really nice Gothic Crowns sell for several times that amount The Gothic design is about the only Victoria design I really like - other than perhaps Una & the Lion With most British coins - it's the reverse that makes or breaks it for me
